I have a '64 D100 with a 3 on the tree 225 /6. The head has been milled .100", ported & polished, new guides, hardened seats, and the engine has the Super six carb, intake and exhaust. What is the recommended redline rpm for this engine? Also, what's a safe cruising rpm for highway driving (long trips)? Thanks |

Redline and where it gives up are about the same, about 4000 with a one barrel. Nice place for cruise is about 2500 to 2700 rpm, right in the middle of the torque band. |

Cruise rpm will depend on carb size, tire size, rear ratio...2500-2700 for a 1 barrel can get as low as 2300 with more carb, gearing, etc... Redline on a 'worked over engine' is about 5-6K... stock bottom end with old bearings should be about 3500-4000 (don't say I warned ya...) -D.Idiot |

redline? this is redline unfortunately the poor ole slant has a bad habit of poking # 5 out. without a good build,if you are looking for max revs,that will probably happen. seen several over the years. keep it under 4k and (hopefully) you should be sweet. regards,Rod |

4000 rpm is about where the power starts to really drop off. I have cruised a well rebuilt stock-internals engine at 36-3800 all the way across the country with no ill effects. I would say 5000 is totally safe for stock internals if the engine isn't gummed up inside. I was running my V motor (junkyard shortblock) to 5500 road racing and that was 100% fine. BUT, when I went to 6000 redline it gave up. My '64 Dart motor has a well rebuilt stock-type bottom end with cast pistons and balanced assy and looser bearing clearances and it is good to 6000. Lou |
