Post subject:  Daily driver on the dyno

Hi all, I´m new here.. :D

I recently got my hands on a Dodge Dart -74 with a 225 /6. As I have been a fan of chevy and v8 my obvious intention was to swap the /6 for a V8... but... The /6 seemed to be in good shape and after a few days driving it I´m all for /6 haha..

I took the slant to work for a dyno-run just see how much it would put out. It whopped out a stunning 69.9rwhp  which would be about 85bhp, so as you can see there´s 25bhp missing.

I made a bet there and then with a friend, that this machine would put out 200rwhp without stock bottom.. so in this thread I thought I keep you update on the 200rwhp project. Note that this is a low-budget tuning, using mosly parts laying around.

Tonight I added MSD6AL ignition, fixed carb vakuum-leak and repaired the leaky vakuum-advance. The MSD-ignition made wonder to the driveability and to idle, tomorrow I´ll be on the dyno again, setting ignition and hope for a few more horses..

Next is headwork, efi-conversion and turbo-setup.

Later!

Sounds like an interesting project. There are a lot of people around here with slants in the the neighborhood of what you are wanting. I have gotten to ride in one that would hold its own with any BMW 3 series.

Ask questions, and you will find lots of help here.

200 rwhp... aftermarket 4 barrel or boost...pull the 1974 distributor and get one from a 1976 car or super six car, and rework the springs...get rid of the EGR... time for better exhaust... stock cam has to go, but you don't have to get crazy...

been there and did that, and still daily drive it...

The MSD box work very good with one of the ole factory electronic distributors is you can find one. I have the 6AL on mine & was running a piont dizzy that was in really good shape & gave no problems. But when I swaped in the electronic dizzy it changed the way it ran totally.

EFI would be the way to go if you can swing it, but IMHO I like the 500 2 barrel Holleys on them. Even with a turbo setup a 500 Holley could make a great blo-thu carb and would feed a pretty good size turbo with a few mods. I am going ot set one up with a 500 myself here soon because I already have the setup seting around. How far the HP limit will be with it I am not sure but I feel like it will carry more than you would think after a few mods & a good fuel system pushing it. With all the super six setups running around I figured it would be worth working it out to work with a turbo. Could be a quick cheap setup that would fit the bill & use parts that most /6er's have layiing around.

Keep us updated on your work, always good to see a new build making progress.

Thanks for the comments. I took it for a spin on the dyno today, with the MSD6AL installed. The idle is greatly improved as well as throttle response. It put out 92bhp but the dist. seems to be installed wrong since I can't advance more than 10degrees. Ill fix the advance and hope too see a 100bhp with more timing.

this one will go EFI and turbo.

their is also an adjustment on the bottom of the dist. (you will most likely have to pull it to adjust, iv never had luck with it in car)

Does anyone know if the 110hp rating is rated in DIN or SAE? I´m home for dinner know but will have a look at the dist. tonight. Running 99octane I´m pretty sure I could put in a about 5degrees more without any worries.

The HP rating is nominally SAE net, but probably not terribly accurate.

That's about all you should get unless you change the slotted plate position on the bottom of the distributor, either way, your initial shouldn't be over 10-12BTDC for a stock distributor with a possible of 14-16 BTDC on a modified pod with a worked over engine... With your '74 distributor, you're gonna have to change the advance springs to get it to do what your shooting for, since the springs won't give you full advance until about 4000 rpm (about the time the 1 barrel and cam run out of breath).

I see what you mean with the mech-advance but that won´t effect max HP since I still need more total timing? I could get the mechanical advance to kick in at lower rpms but I need a few degrees more at total advance, so I´ll try pulling the dist, rotate the rotor back to next slot and move turn the dist back again, then advance..

You´ll have to excuse my poor english.. I´m swedish :)

D.Idiot is right on with his comment on the springs. The 74 distributor govenor is a 15R (long slots) and the factory installed a really stiff short secondary spring that doesn't allow for much advance. I used a long looped spring from a 400 big block distributor and twisted the posts around on the govenor to allow for more throw.
By adjusting the hold down plate on the bottom of distributor all the way over you can get 16 degrees initial advance.
This way you can get the power your looking for by 2500 to 3000 rpm range depending on rear gear ration and wheel size.

Good luck and keep us posted. Wished we lived closer so I could put mine on the dyno for a comparison.

Your "poor" English is better than that used by many native speakers of the language. Welcome.

Great to see someone that can get real figures. One can't help but wonder how many high horsepower engines are out there that are no different than stock. Good luck with your project, we're watching.
Be sure to put the word out if you're having trouble finding something. This is a great forum for finding bits and pieces.

Hi and thanks for all comments!

I have saved all dyno runs but the rpm-input has been out-of-order so it doesn´t show much but max hp. Tomorrow I will adjust to more inital advance and perhaps another dyno-run on monday.

I´ve planned to use stock bottom-end but I feel the stock cam is running out of breath really quick and running an oversized turbo I could need a bit more rpm to get boost. If anyone would be willing to ship a used or new cam all the way to norway I´d be glad to buy one.

Plans for the week to come:
Start port-work on a new head
Rebuild 2-barrel manifold with 318 TBI
Start welding new exhaust for turbo
Etc..

Have a nice weekend
