Post subject:  Fuel Sending Unit Clogged

Yesterday I took the sending unit out of my 74 Dart gas tank to install in a new tank. I tried blowing through it and got very little air flow. Pipe cleaner in the tube cleaned out a little of the dried up gunk, and then I tried heavy duty copper wire. All I did was jamb the gunk further down and now no air flow. How do you clean out the gunk? New units are $88. Anybody ever used high pressure air hose or something corrosive? Suggestions.

Never, ever put pure O2 in a pipe that isn't spotlessly clean. Boom!

I had the filter sock collapse on me once and starve the engine for fuel. I pulled the fuel inlet hose off the pump, took off the gas cap and blew air into the tank. I lost about a quart of gas, but I wasn't starving the engine any more. 8)

Randy, cap off one end and dump some solvent (maybe B-12 or Beeman's) into the pickup tube for a good soak. Empty it later and then blow a little compressed air through the end opposite from the one you jambed it up.

Thanks for the replies. The compressed air did the trick. I have a new sock and float. Before I reinstall the sending unit, I wonder if the same varnish/crap is clogging my line from the tank to the engine. Anybody ever had a clog in the fuel line under the body of the car?
