Hey guys:

Over the summer, a buddy of mine into V8 Mopars, said he had a line on some parts from the estate of a Slant Alcohol dragster from the Spokane, Wa. area. He had another buddy racing in Idaho and talked him into stopping to buy some stuff if it looked like a decent deal. A bunch of weeks pass and I hear that some parts have arrived in Portland for me, bunch more weeks and the phone call to come get them.

That paragraph above tells all I know about the parts I will describe below. If you have any idea where/what/who about this stuff I would be curious to know...

First, a trick homemade oilpan with windage screen and trap doors and such, two temp gauge senders, and it looks like with some modifying for clearance, possibly will fit in my car.

Pretty cool pan, but will take some pretty serious fab work to fit my Valiant, but I think it can be done.

I also got two fully prepped blocks, one used needing new bore and pistons, although its already .100" over. A second unused block is .100" over and set up for the pistons I will discuss further into this...

Both blocks have all passages deburred and radiused, debris screens installed on oil returns, and all casting flash removed. No pictures of the blocks cause I figured they are just boring and uninteresting as photos. However, both blocks came with modified oil pickups as per this photo...

I also got two sets of Ross .100" over forged custom domed(slightly) pistons on polished 225" slant rods with good ARP rod bolts. One set of pistons is junk from leaning out and melting various areas around the top ring. The connecting rods are fine. The other set of pistons is perfect but has one rod with a spun bearing and severely overheated rod cap. I figure if I take one rod from the bad pistons and balance it to the other rods on the good pistons I should be fine for one set anyway...

I should be able to take the order # off the piston and get the piston parameters from Ross.

I also got a crank that has been heavily reworked, deburred, and radiused. Much work with a grinder and sanding disks has been done on the crank, but I had it buried and didn't dig it out for photos. Also got another set of ARP rod bolts(new), and a new set of pushrods of unmeasured length, so I don't know what they are, might even be stockers.

I can't really call my buddy an idiot for making this deal for me, but I will anyway, because for some reason, he told the third party picking up the stuff not to get any cylinder head stuff unless they were later heads without the plug cup thingies...coulda slapped him when he told me, since I prefer the early heads so I can change cams without lifting the head. So I don't know what kind of ported head stuff I missed out on, or intakes or other stuff.

That said, I can't complain cause I got it all for $200! I like doing my own heads anyway.

The parts were being sold by the son of the racer who died, or at least that is what I have been told, other than that, I just know it was in Spokane or surrounding area.

Does anybody know anything about this stuff, or the guy who owned and raced an alky slant dragster up here?

Gearhead

Pretty cool purchase, and it is a shame about them not picking up the heads. My guess is the heads would of been some pretty sweat pieces. Anyway like they say no use in crying over spilled milk.

The pistons look like a very nice setup. My guess is they might be some very high compression stuff. With the little mini dome top on it they should make a good quench/sqish setup that will be very detination resistant. You will just have to make sure you dont go to high wwith the compression. If need be you can open up the combustion chamber on a set of heads to get the compression where you want it, but with a quech area like that you might be able to pull off 11: to 1 compression without detination. I feel sure 10.5 : 1 will be easy. Those pistons will make for a good performance build for sure. You will want to measure them each & have a block fitted to them. The Ross pistons are very good but the clearance needs to be setup right or they will give trouble ( Just like any performance piston). Ross should be able to tell you just what they need to be clearanced at for a gas setup, or alcy if that is what you will be running.

Like I said, cool find. Keep us posted on what you do with this rare stuff.

Jess

I dont know who owned/raced this stuff, but whoever he/she was I bet he would want someone to put it to good use instead of being trashed or just let set in a corner.

You might also be able to find out the original purchaser......

I wonder if this is the same guy I got some parts via a 2nd party over the last couple of years. My seller was near Spokane and had bought a whole roundtrack racecar rig with multiple Slant engines, Plymouth coupe, trailer...

The engine work looks pretty nice. I couldn't afford to get everything the guy had. Not nearly that cheap either. I was able to get:

2 Alum blocks, both bored some, but no corrosion
worked MP 80-up head w/modded Cliff valve cover, unused
long headers
alum flywheel
similar oil pan and ext wet sump oil pump setup
offy int

Could be the same original fabricator, or likely someone who knew your guy.

There are definitely people out there we don't know much or anything about!

Lou
