Post subject:  Twins! - Iron Block Performance Build-ups

Working "double time" on getting engines built.
I started on "Raquel" a few weeks back and already have the block preped, bored .060 o/s and have the con rods selected. Piston and crank work is in process as we speak.

In the meantime... another SL6 arrived for a rework... we call this one "Guzzi". This engine was purchased already rebuilt for performance but the owner wants it torn down and reviewed, then reassembled for racing. The goal is to have it rebuilt by the New Year so the owner can get it into his car and out to Las Vegas in March.

Another "first" for me, (us) as Allen and myself are building these two Slants "side-by-side". We will keep everyone posted on the results.

Its too bad we overloaded our teleporter last week...(Alex , why did you even think the Sub and trailer would fit in there?).....cuz I would love to drop by with the Valaint motor and be Allan II for a while.....

Looks like I will have to fuddle away here to make LV......right after we clear the teleporter....

I don't know if Guzzi is a women's name...
May-be if I keep these two together long enough, they will have "little Slants" :roll: :wink:

No Schnider cam in either of these build-ups.
Raquel get's a Isky cam, Guzzi gets an Erson.
Both cams for these engines are way more aggressive then the Schnider cam specs you posted.

Yes, Both engine are being built as "race only" with big cam, lots of head work and compression.

If helpful, I can point-out "special stuff" as we get these engines assembled.
I will mainly focus on stuff that applies to race Slants that I did not covered in the Twiggy build-up.

When you have a moment could you post cam spec's and compression ratio's to give us a heads up on how much HP your shooting for? That would put all your work into context.

You always say, figure out and focus in on what you want and build for it. I did with your help and am very happy.

The Guzzi engine is progressing but poor Raquel is "stuck"... I can't seem to find a crankshaft that meets my needs for that engine.

Anyway, the Guzzi engine has a Erson 270 cam ground on a 110 L/C
I milled .085 off the block to get a -.110 piston deck height.
(Yes, the pistons started out being .195 down in the holes)
The compression is set to be 10.5 to 1 per the customer's request, using race fuel is "not an issue" seeing this will be a "racer".

One thing I did before milling the block was to install plugs in the "sand shake-out" holes that the head gasket blocks-off, this will help stabilize the top deck.

You can spot a block that has been decked by the depth of the wall in the middle of the lifter area, this is usually .100 below the deck. The arrow points to this spot and on Guzzi, it is now just about flush with the top deck.
The other arrow points to the bolt holes, which have to be re-counter sunk after decking.

Being the owner of the Guzzi motor,this is VERY interesting to me,This motor is going into a special 62 Signet,3.5 chop top,working like crazy trying for Vegas this year,will be posting pics soon,sanding,grinding.bleeding Mark

I was wondering when Moto Guzzi Mark would chime-in.

Guzzi went together well, the only out of the ordinary thing was the amount of cam retard needed toget the cam events in the right place... must be that 70s vintage MP (Mopar Performance) double row timing chain set we used.

The engine also gets a MP windage tray.

I did a little rewelding seeing that Mopar's manufacturer only used one small spot weld per corner... and I have seen those come loose.
The tray also needed a little more clearance where the pick-up tube passes by, hence the "V" cut in the side cut-out.

We have the Gizzi engine assembled.
Everything went together well. Static compression ended-up at 10.7 when we cc checked the volume thru the spark plug hole at TDC.
Ended-up a pinch higher because we used a steel shim head gasket instead of a thicker composit type gasket.
Here is what it looks like assembled:

We added some longer rocker arm ball-stud adjuster screws and lock nuts. This allows proper lash adjustment without custom lenght pushrods.

Now I have to "shift gears" and do a 904 trans. rebuild... the decision was made to switch away from the cable type tranny and go with a big input shaft 68 and up 904 to go with this new engine.
