i had a 69 904 bolted to my 77 slant and i would go ionto reverse but wouldn't grab liek it used to(no real power). Also it stopped shifting into reverse. So i got a 74 904 with a new converter and installed it. However i swapped the valve body from the 69 because the 74s kickdown was busted and it was easier to just swap them than it was to trade the shift mechanism in the valve body. I also adjusted the bands while i had the 74 apart. So it's bolted in now, fluid is at the appropriate level, but it still won't shift into 3rd. Reverse is fine now though. I suspect the valve body is the culprit. Anyone have any ideas?

when its in second... not shifting... is in engine brakin or not, thatll help ya determine where the fault in the hyrdo citcuit is.
if its enginebrakin its sounds like manual shift area, if it isnt, i would check kickdown.
still nada? then i would recheck that band tightness
how many areas to check line pressure do 904's have?

engine is not braking. the converter is not trying to engage to shift into 3rd gear. There are 2 places to check line pressure on the 904. Not sure how though, but i think a compression tester would work for it with an adapter. I know how to adjust the reverse band it's at the rear of the case pretty easy to get to and it engages reverse just fine. Is there a band for 3rd gear or not. To be honest this is the first time i've been into a transmission other than to change a filter so i'm learning as i go along. My next step was going to be to disassemble and clean the valve body per the instructions in the shop manual i have.

I had a really similar problem after I rebuilt my 904. The tranny wasn't even trying to shift into 3rd. I pulled the pan and realized that my accumulator spring had come out of it's groove (that's the big wavy one that holds the piston shaped thing in it's bore). I snapped it into place and away I went.

I'll check that before i try to clean and inspect the valve body. Haven't had a chance to tear into it yet. So i'll update when i figure something out.

tore into it last night and discovered the 2-3 shift governer was stuck with a combination of fine metal filings and varnish. So it should be fixed now. Thanks for all the ideas on it.

You know you just lost your Part Throttle Kickdown??? :(
Nice thing to have with our Slants.
I convert ALL my 727's to this newer Perk.
My '67 727 has a '76 V/Body in it from an old Slant 904.
Very nice in my 225/6 A-100 Pickup. 8)
