Post subject: | Swapping manual/power steering between two cars |
Hi folks! I have two complete and running cars, first a 66 Dart GT slant six with manual steering and column shifter, second a 69 Barracuda V8 with power steering and console shifter. Do I have all the parts I need to swap the steering from one car to the other? The Dart will get the whole front suspension from the Barracuda, exept the K-frame. Barracuda gets a 73 Dart Front suspension, including K-frame, and the Dart´s steering. I heard the /6 manual steering boxes have the weaker bushings, while v8 units feature stronger needle bearings. Main concern, I guess, is: Will the steering shafts (long thin metal thing between steering wheel and coupler) swap? Thanks Chris |

No. You'll need either a complete steering column assembly or the shorter steering shaft (swapped into your existing column assembly) from a '63-'66 A-body originally equipped with power steering. It's not a question of weak vs. strong, but of standard vs. premium. The needle bearings give lower friction than the plain bushings. This was to compensate for the increased steering difficulty due to the heavier 8-cylinder engine. Either type of box will work; I would prefer to have the needle bearings, but if it's a choice between a box in good condition w/bushings and a box in poor condition w/bearings, I'll take the bushings. I have a bushing-equipped box in my '62 with the 20:1 ratio worm and ballnut assembly installed (4½ turns lock-to-lock) and I like it a lot.

If the shaft you picked up is from a p/s car, yes. |

The K frames wont swap between the 69 and 66. |
