Post subject:  Cleaning Fuel Tank

Hello All,

I'm getting ready to change the fuel sock as mine keeps getting plugged up with crud. I've read the threads and this doesn't seem like that hard of job.

My question is my 71 demon has two large tubes coming out of the tank, one is the filler tube and I guess the is a breather tube?

I haven't seen any of the threads mention this. Also what gaskets should I get so I can put her back together. I think I should get a sending unit gasket, but what else?

I like the idea of using a chain to help break loose the crud in there and then using a magnet to pull it back out. What type of detergent do you suggest I use to clean out the tank?

Thanks for all your help.

Be very careful about sparks, leaks, ventilation, and weight.

Presoaking the threaded fasteners is a big help. I use PB Blaster. Early and often.

Use a jack under the tank to support it while getting things loose. Use a board to spread the load.

The tank straps should have rubber liners, and there should be a pad - mine was tar-like - between the tank the the body. New liners and foam pads are available.

Replace the filler neck grommet, sending unit gasket, and fuel inlet sock.
Take a good look at your sender float. If there's any doubt about it, replace it while you're in there.

I was amazed at the amount of crunchy, spongy crud that came out of my tank. I really need a new tank one of these days.

Thanks for the info. I'll be trying it as soon as the new fuel sock I ordered gets here. I need to check into the grommet and the fuel sender gasket. Year One here I come.
