Post subject:  Timing Cover Question.

I just bought a 72 Duster with a slant 6 and im in the middle of going through the motor to freshen up a few things. I just put a Head Gasket on and and I was about to change the timing chain out. My question is, do you have to drop the oil pan down in order to get the timing cover off?? I didnt want to start prying on it and bend the cover because it was being held in by the oil pan. Thanks!

You don't have to pull the pan down, but it does make it a lot easier to get it back together.

Thanks! well the motor is in the car and I was just wondering if the pan could be pulled down alittle to get the cover on... But from looking at it, the K Frame is keeping that from doing it. I was just hoping i didnt have to raise the motor a few inches.

if the engine is in the car just loosen the first 3bolts on the pan rail, both sides, then remove all the bolt in the timing cover. then take 2 stubby flat top screw drivers and carefully push them in on the pan rail sides where you loosened the bolts, watch the gasket, this will take the strain of the dowel pins and the cover will come of and then go back smoothly. when you have it back together before you remove the screw drivers squeeze some silicone in between the block and pan just incase you nicked the gasket, works for me
