Timing.....is it gears or chain on a 225 Slant 6? I'm an old Chev and Ford guy. Is 1/4" free play too much between crank pully back and forth? My 63 Dart runs great down the road but would not idle. Step on the gas and it will burn rubber. The pulley came seperated from the damper. That is why I am in there......Chuck Anybody have a good used single pulley damper in their stack of stuff? HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL YOU GUYS.!!!!!CHUCK |

It is a chain, and yes that is enough play to not let it idle consistently or get optimum mileage. Welcome and be prepared to get a Factory Service manual. For a puller, a $20 one will do the trick with the correct bolts. Getting it back on is the hard part. Be sure and get a bolt to reinstall it. Clean the crank threads as good as you can and lube them up good with luberplate. I bought solid metal gears, no nylon........ SL6 Dan or Doctor Dodge may share a few more points, however I just went through this a few months ago because my timing chain seal was leaking. I bought a sleeve for the damper reinstalled it and that stopped the leak. Have a safe and Happy New Year! |

There are no nylon aftermarket ones, he'd have to find an NOS one...silent chain versions are all about the same Dynagear, Melling, etc...The hi-po versions are more expensive but offer some advantages if you are dialing in the timing better/swapping cams... You're in California so you can have your Damper refurbed by Damper Dudes or Damper Doctor, both have had good service in the past, and what you get back is as good as new (so far haven't had one go bad on me in 50K+..... ) -D.Idiot |
