I want to convert my 70 valiant to disc brakes and large bolt pattern, so I bought a 74 dart 318/904 7.25 for parts. I thought all 7.25 rear axles were the same c-clip design but after doing some searches on slantsix forum now im not sure if I can just swap axles between these two cars or do I need to change entire rear ends? I like my gears now and I havent checked but I am afraid the Dart will have taller highway gears, higher than 3:23. Has anyone done this swap or know if they will interchange? p.s. just thought about brakes, im not sure if they have the same size drums if not I may just swap the whole axle. |

You have to swap the entire rear end. The axles are the same length, but the bearings and backing plates are set toward the center of the housing (which is narrower) to accommodate the wider rear brakes of the later cars without increasing the track width. Also, 7 1/4s didn't get C-clips until much later. |

Its easy to swap early gears into a late housing. |
