Bill, that's about typical for a stock slant. The original factory static C/R was rated at 8.2:1, and accurate calculations will show that many of them were down in the high 7's for ratio. Fortunately, there's a lot of material on both the deck surface of the block, and the deck surface of the head, so milling is a good option to raise the compression.
You might want to peruse the articles section off the main page of this site.

I don't think he has ever seen the inside of a slant six. He is sooooooo wrong. A 170 engine is a "zero deck" motor, and most of them have the piston down in the hole by .015 - .040.

This is why you should not talk to anyone at Clifford. My slant is .116 in the hole AFTER I decked the block .060.

The reason he never saw one further than .040 is he never has seen a slant with the head off.

You have a perfectly normal motor.......really.

Bill, welcome to the site, but do you think you could turn the "caps lock" off, and use some periods, and commas?

That's OK, we have spell check. Punctuation helps heaps too, but the board doesn't have anything for that.

My '73 225 has the pistons .177" down in the hole. My combustion chambers were 62cc so I had .080 taken off the head and will take .100" off the block to get from 7.7:1 up to 10:1. I just hope I have valve to piston clearance!

How much compression do you want to run?
What cam are you planning to use?

How strong do those pistons look? Are they cast pistons with a steel expansion strut around the pins?
Do the pistons have a large cut or drilled holes under the oil ring?
Does your budget allow for a nice set of custom made, high compression forged pistons?
