This morning I removed the package tray from my 63 Valiant. Previous owner had installed two speakers in it and covered the tray with a thin vinyl material (like you might use to line your cupboards in your house). It probably looked good initially, but all the glue he used to get the vinyl to stick bled through and looked like crud. In the past I have purchased replacement package trays, but this time I want something a little different and long lasting. I got some 1/8' masonite and cut it to fit the shelf. I won't be putting the speaker back in. The interior of the car is a light blue. I would like some ideas or suggestions for covering the masonite tastefully. Sorry, no shag rugs....I already did that. Thanks for any help you might render.

I used thin Luan plywood instead of Masonote and from underneath stretched and stapled some old headliner material on it that pulled off my '65 Valiant when I replaced the headliner.

In case you change your mind, new package trays can be had for your '63 from REM Automotive . They offer a range of colours; it's likely none of them will match your interior exactly. That's no hassle; get a black or a white one and see my post on painting interior soft parts.

I just finished doing the package tray for my '63 Pontiac and I also used masonite for the base. I then used high density 1/4" foam and covered the whole thing in burgundy vinyl. You can use marine vinyl if you want, I think it has more UV protection in it. I'm happy with the outcome and the foam gives it a bit of depth. Oh, I attached it to the back using 1/4" staples and a lot of stretching.

I used a piece of FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic panel) for my package tray. I was going to put a piece of carpet over it, but when I put it in place to test the fit I realized that I liked the pebbly texture (the other side is smooth). I think I am going to paint it to match the interior and let it go.

Thanks slantsix dan fo the link to Blue Star Spares. In looking over the site I noticed that they have locking gas caps for 61-70 - RV1-VG. Do you know if this will fit my 64 valiant. I need a new gas cap and haven't been able to find one.

I'm pretty sure the caps they're offering are the CPC items. I brought a few of those over and found that they don't fit.

Thanks to all who posted. I made one on my own, but I'm not totally satisfied with it. I did contact REM, as Dan suggested because a question arose whether or not a particular package tray would fit my 4 door car. Mike and Elizabeth at REM went out of their way to locate the tray I wanted. Good folks to deal with.

Any good auto upholstery shop will have fiberboard in stock. They use it for to make new door panels. It's much like the original, but without the pattern some cars have. It's inexpensive and when painted, it looks original.
