Post subject:  Mechanical Linkage adjustment on Auto

Wife has a 63 Valiant (push button auto) and 318 V8 conversion (was like this when we bought it) done.

There are mechanical linkage arms 3 or maybe 4 pieces of rod that are all threaded.

The trans shifts early on acceleration and barely wants to kick down. If I adjust the linkage arm by the carb I can get better shifting points but then wont go WOT or shift down properly.

So my question is there a certain "procedure" I need to attack to get both WOT (kick down) and acceleration points set properly???

Thanks for any insight!

Putting a V8 in a '63 is non-trivial. There's a lot of firewall interference (wiper motor, etc.) that was changed at the engineering level when the V8 was put in the A-body from the factory starting in '64. Your difficulty (can adjust for OK upshift points or for WOT/downshift) usually comes from somebody having got the geometry wrong. Wherever there's a bellcrank or a lever arm in the system, its length has to be carefully calculated so that full throttle travel is very slightly less than full transmission kickdown lever travel. If the geometry's wrong, then no adjustment of the existing links' lengths will solve the problem; you'll need to rework the kickdown setup entirely to make it work. Given that this is a custom installation, you'd probably be money and effort ahead just to put in one of there instead.
