Not sure if this is the route you want to take, but I took some bucket seats out of a 1993 Pontiac Sunbird and installed them in my 63 Dart. They went right in, and I only needed to add a few washers to one side to get it even.

visited the local pullapart the other day and several omni/horizons and a couple of sundances had bucket seats......has anyone put these in a 74 dart or do you have suggestions for what is best......thinking about changing out my bench seat......any thoughts appreciated....vic |

I dunno, I have heard that Intrepid seats were a decent set of buckets to retrofit into an older Mopar. Of course if you look thru magazines like Hot Rod, car Craft, etc, you see alot of different JY seat swaps. I thought of scouting the local yards and sit in a few, see what feels good and is close in color to what I want. Then, you gotta hope that the local upholstery shops can get a match in fabric and have the back seat redone to match. The key is getting a set of fronts that don't need redone as well, and are in a color that you like. Interior, I have found, can get REAL expensive. My one friend had a 66 Coronet "500" that he redid from the ground up; other than the engine and wheels, it looked just like it was fresh off the line, all redone back to original. He used either Year One or Legendary seat covers and by the time he was done, he always griped about having $5K just in the interior! That's about 2/3 what I HOPE to be able to build my whole car for! I found a set of new F+R seatcovers incl. a "buddy seat" if I so decide to use, via Ebay for my Volare bucket seat interior, which nobody along the lines of Legendary, Y-O,etc, makes, that I have found(yet). I believe that they were done by some mom and pop upholstery shop somewhere (they're brand new and came in the trunk of the seller's car when HE bought it, and the only reason he didn't like them, is that they weren't black, he's switching colors on his car). They have that old school well made, craftsmanship look. Considering that I was charged $150 to fix the seat bottom on my Wrangler driver's side bucket seat, and that was with me taking it out and carrying it in, I didn't think that $200 was bad at all, and the pattern does look factory too. Gauging by the charge for just 1 bucket seat bottom, I'm guessing that having both halves of a compact/mid sized car (by '70s standards, that is) back seat done would run $350 minimum, $500 might even be a low estimate depending on material, pattern, etc. Then unless you get lucky to have a good dashpad or find one, youre looking at $500 min to a place like Just Dashes. The snowball starts......A JY transplant might also work as a temp fix while you look for better stockers or have yours redone. Just don't be in a hurry and a "deal" will fall in your lap. Get in a hurry and you'll get screwed for sure. Then to think, I threw away a good set of Wrangler buckets

The pattern on the bottom of the stock A body bucket seat is the same on the Omni, as well as all the 70's Mopars. It is 12" square. To make it fit your car, you need the proper tracks for your target car. You can make other tracks work by putting extensions either laterally or vertically, but the easiest trick is to get the tracks for your car. I have Omni seats in this car. I put Plymouth Sport Fury Seats from 1974 in my old Duster. The hard part these days is getting the A body bucket tracks. Sam |
