OK, I did a search and some of the results came back with numerous pages and I could only view the first page of topic choices. I had asked a very similar question once but not exactly so here goes. I am putting a 77 slant into a 66 Dart SW. Now a refernce article I saved talked about some stuff to NOT remove and one was the charcol canister, but I believe it's because of the tank being a closed system. So that means I get rid of it in the 66 setup right? Any help in general would be appreciated from thos who have done this type of swap also. |

The 1966 isn't plumbed for that kind of equipment, so all that can go...-D.Idiot |

The only emissions equipment the 66 is plumbed for is a PVC valve and a hose from the nipple on the oil fill cap to the air cleaner. 65's only had a PVC valve. |

The hose from the air cleaner to the oil filler cap started in '64 in California, and in '68 (not '66) in the other 49 states + Canada. 1966 California cars were the first of the CAP (Clean Air Package) cars released in production volumes, and they have distributor vacuum advance control valves and such. So, yeah, you can just swap the '66 oil pan and pickup (mandatory; the '77 pan + pickup won't work in a '66), the '66 valve cover, intake manifold (if you want -- to keep the engine bay clean and free of unneeded widgets) and carburetor + air filter onto the '77 engine and drop 'er in. On the other hand, you could easily add the '77 thermostatic air cleaner to the '66 carburetor setup for better cold running & driveability. |

I must be getting dumber with age (47), but I'm getting confused. The engine is from a 77 and I'm putting it in a 66. I have an article saved from you Dan and I see the need to keep some of the Emmisions stuff from it, but I'll dump the C Canister. But why would I change out the valve cover, and intake? I know I need to change the oil pan. (although I have heard with a V8 centerlink I could keep the one I have). If the PVC valve (etc) helps the Environment and doesn't reduse performance, I'm all for it. |

The oil pan doesn't hit the centerlink, it will hit the "K"member. Must use PCV.The engine is from a 77 and I'm putting it in a 66. Also, the 77 engine if being used with the 66 auto trans will require a 77 flexplate, and a adapter bushing in the end of the crankshaft, then you use the 66 torque converter and trans. |

To keep the original '66 appearance. This is optional.Quote: and intake?
This is an optional swap to keep the engine bay clean and original looking by not having a nonfunctional and potentially leak-prone EGR valve you don't need or want on a '66. It's also a good opportunity to put in the good gaskets for the manifolds-to-head and the intake-to-exhaust (heat riser/hotbox) junctions, which are very likely to have at least one leak in pretty much any used engine you happen to pick up. Of course, if the '77 engine has the 2bbl setup and you are up for changing the '66 from rod to cable type accelerator linkage, by all means upgrade to the 2bbl.You didn't mention what you're doing for an ignition system. Either distributor will fit and work, but the '77 originally had electronic ignition while the '66 originally had points. Quote: I know I need to change the oil pan. You will need to change the oil pan and pickup pipe assembly, and there is only one kind of centrelink in '66.Quote: If the PVC valve (etc) helps the Environment and doesn't reduse performance, I'm all for it.
The PCV system only works for you, not against you.As has been mentioned, if you're keeping a '66 automatic transmission, you need the adaptor ring that goes between the torque converter nose and the crankshaft counterbore. You can get it from Pat Blais, tflitepatty@verizon.net . |
