hey guys i have a 74 duster ut has been sitting for awhile i was thinking about getting it back on the road to be my daily driver what would be a good place to start i think it start the only think that i think it needs so the vavle need to be lash is there a way to do this cold i bought new one awhile back and have to lash them let

Must warm it to get them correct, otherwise just have to do it again after it's warmed up.

Change the fuel filter also if its been setting. Oil & filter would be good to change also. Ajust the valve with the engine at full temp. Jess

That depends entirely on the air temp outside. It usually takes about 5-10 minutes. Do you not have a temp gauge? Sam

7.2 minutes at 55.7 out side temp.look at your gauge,mark

Rough the valves in cold, then fire it up and run it till warm. Just set them a tad loose, then fire it up. As long as you don't rev the engine up, you won't move a lot of oil out on the ground. The valves are set while the engine is running. Where are you at? Perhaps you can get one of the old hands here in Oregon to help you out. It really needs to be at full operating temperature to get it right. It's worth the hassle. CJ

If the vehicle has been sitting and the fuel is old, it is a good idea to disconnect the rubber hose from the inlet side of the fuel pump, connect a piece of longer hose and place it into a can of fresh gas. Running old fuel through the engine can cause a lot of problems. DD

I would set them a little looser for better mileage. I have mine set at .012 and .022. My mileage seems to be the best at those settings. As for other ideas on improving mileage I would start with timing and a distributor recurve. Once your engine is running well and purring like a kitten, no carb problems or intake/exhaust gasket leaks, the fine tuning will go along way. My original stock setup would get me 18 to 19 mpg. After the fine tuning I am up to 24 mpg in mixed city and freeway driving with a stock 904 automatic. Some day I will take it in a trip to find out what mileage I can get. There are allot ways to get better mileage. If you need more, don't be afraid to ask. Doctor Dodge is our expert and has given all of us many good ideas:idea: which I have tried and found to work.

ok sound good also would a like to know if a 904 torqueflite be better than the stock one i have

What transmission do you have? A manual 3 speed? A manual 4 speed? Or and automatic? If you have an stock automatic, it is a 904 unless your car has been modified.
