Post subject: | Steering Wheel Replacement |
The steering wheel in my 63 Valiant was covered long ago with a leather wrap (not the one laced on). I would like to replace it with a more modern wheel by Grant. Have any of you used one of the Grant wheels, and if so, which one? Thanks |

I have a Grant "Challenger" steering wheel in my Duster....and it was in my Charger before that. The center cap for the horn never fit/worked right, but I have an older style. The newer ones have a better design. If you have manual steering, as I suspect, you won't want to go too much smaller in diameter or steering effort will increase. |

The kids in my church youth group (GodsRods) surprised me for my birthday by installing a Grant GT wheel in my '72 Dart. They got it a little off center, but I didn't change it. I can't remember the diamter, but it is a little smaller than the stock wheel. I have 20:1 manual steering and it isn't that bad. The one thing I would recommend is checking the offset of the wheel compared to your stock one. Grant offers different depths of wheels and adapters to compensate for differences. The wheel the kids put on my Dart isn't as deep as the stock wheel and it causes it to sit too close to the turn signal lever. One of Grant's deeper adapters would bring the new wheel out further. |

Years ago I telephoned Grant and spoke to an engineer about what might work for my application (finding a wheel with a horn button to replace my stupid Ford wheel w/o a horn). I was very impressed by his honesty and knowledge. |
