While I’m beating this horse I might as well ask another question. I’ve seen it mentioned on this site that while doing a manifold job, I should replace all of the manifold studs. I’ve drilled out tons of broken bolts and I’m pretty darn good at it (if I do say so myself). I even have a big pile of tools for the job. I still despise it. I wouldn’t put a sign out front and advertise for it if I could get $100 per hole. (Of course no one brings me one unless they've already tried themself) I really hate it and I know why from experience. I loath a broken bolt. They aren’t fun to me at all. It’s always been my policy to leave head studs alone unless I had the head off. As much as I hate removing broken bolts, you can multiply that by 10 if I have to stand on my head in an engine compartment and do it. So I have to ask. What’s the chances of getting eleven remaining studs out without breaking one off flush with the head? What’s the chance of twisting and scarring one up so that it’s unusable and have to break it on purpose or pull the head? How much heat can I apply to the bottom row without ruining the head gasket? If they are all like the front one, they ain’t coming out without heat. And you know which one is going to break. I broke the front one getting the nut off so I used a little heat on the rest. #6 by the firewall is fine — Now. Danny |

849-001 is still a valid Dorman number. I think maybe your parts counterman doesn't stock 'em and doesn't want to order 'em, or perhaps they're otherwise "no longer available" from his store. See also this thread. The '093 studs oughtta work fine. You're right, they're a better match for the originals than the '094. I'll go in and change the recommendation if I can find it. The frontmost and rearmost studs seem the most problem-prone (bending, breaking, etc.). I've had a lot less trouble with the studs in the middle. That said, they all go through thousands of heat/cool cycles over the years, and while there is some risk of breakage whenever you remove an old stud, I'd much rather deal with it on the bench with everything accessible than under the hood after the manifolds are installed. Remember, if a stud's one torque away from breaking off, it is going to break off either when you attempt to remove it...or when you attempt to tighten its nut. You get to choose. I know what my choice is! |

Looks like it's gonna hurt either way. I can be a little more careful removing them and have a little more chance - I guess I'll order 13 studs instead of 2. Thanks, Danny |
