Post subject:  Why are my pushrods bending?

So I've installed my new Erson RV cam, and getting ready to index, but in tightening down the rocker arm shaft, I've bent the first cylinder's intake pushrod now twice!

Camshaft turns easily, the rod was seated in the tappet, and the tappet does go up and down.

What's going on?

As always, thanks for your help,

Joe

Are the valves opening? Could be stuck.

More likely is that your valve(s) have hit the piston. You need to back off your adjusters before torquing the rocker shaft, then readjust valves. Especially if you have a new cam and/or milled head. I did this once.

I did the same thing, I forgot to loosen the adjusters since the factory intake lash is .010 and the cam is something like .020 and I milled the head .100 off.
I bent all 6 intakes push rods when I put the head together and turned the engine over by hand a few times.

With 0.100" off, you are on the border of needing shorter pushrods, but should be OK. Just keep an ear on the tappet noise and if it gets louder, readjust the valves and check to see if some are backing off quickly. Smith Bros pushrods are awesome.

.100" off the head in my duster I was out of rocker arm adjustment on a stock block / cam - I had to shim up the rocker shaft to get enough adjustment to avoid buying longer adjusting screws and or Shorter push rods.
