On my 63 Dart with a pushbutton transmission, is there any form of neutral safety switch?
If there is, mine doesn't work, or was 63 before neutral safety switches were needed?

I just don't want to get called on not having one at the dragstrip. They usually don't check stock shifters, and I've gone twice with no checks, but I have never raced this car at a points race, which I may have to do if I can't get my Nova squared away.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I really don't think they'll check, but if there's a way to rig one up, I will.

Yes, automatic '63s were originally equipped with a neutral safety switch. It sounds like you are able to crank the engine with any gear selected, is that right? If so, you will need to figure out what's wrong and fix it. Could be a bad neutral safety switch. Could be a manual-transmission starter relay installed on an automatic car. Could be a hacked "repair" done by grounding the brown wire that's supposed to go from the starter relay to the neutral safety switch.

If you need a new neutral safety switch, you can get one from Pat Blais ( tflitepatty@verizon.net ) or from Andy Bernbaum ( www.oldmoparts.com -- same switch as '60-'62 Valiant ).

Yes, that's what's happening. Where is all that located?

Busted! Go get the factory(!) service manual for your car, and possibly the other two books mentioned in this thread.

Neutral Safety Switch: Screwed into the driver's side of the transmission
Starter relay: On the firewall, with a large and a small stud connection (large one has a fat wire going to the starter) and one or two 1/4" spade push-on connectors.
