Anybody have first hand experience with this type and care to make any comments, positive or negative? I'm thinking about the Mallory Unilite distributor, specifically. Would be interested to hear comparisons to the Mopar magnetic impulse type distributor. Thanks. |

Well, by the number of OEM applications that use an optical trigger (LT1 is the only one that comes to mind) and how it's been abandoned by GM I think there are better systems available. The engine compartment is a hot, dirty place. Optical triggers need to stay clean. Magnetic triggers like the variable reluctance used in OE Chrysler electronic ignitions are very accurate and durable. Unilites got a reputation for failure. Mallory even sells some kind of voltage regulator or surge suppressor to keep the thing alive. The best deal going for the money is a recurved Chrysler electronic distributor triggering a good 4-pin HEI module and HEI coil. |

The reading I've done seems to support your opinion. I've got an NOS MP kit on the shelf and have used them before with good results. Will probably stick with that for my current project. The Unilite is purdy, but expensive and (it seems) of questionable reliabilty. Thanks for the response. |

One other thing about Mallory distributors... Some of the advance mechanisms are flawed. The stops that limit the mechanical advance are known to break right off. This cause some burned pistons in a friend's oval track car. |
