Well here is a question that would be a nice help to be answered me and my dad first noticed the timming chain on my motor had some slack in it when we pulled it out and us and my neighbor began to rebuild it but when we put it back on my friend gave us anther set of chain and gears which wherent made for this slant or he was mistaken on that one but well its just a tiny slack from what my dad says its fine but well there are plenty people out there who know so im asking yall

When installing a new timing chain with new gears, it should be tight, no slack.

On even a slitly used chain there'll be some slack. The less the better. My new motor after a 1000 miles had a little slack.

well my dad says it would be alright but i have another motor that was just for some parts that had water in it would that have got in the chain cover?

The only way to know if water got into the engine you are talking about is to take it apart and inspect it. And then the condission of the chain & gears will have to be checked to see if they are usable.


A little slack with a used chain would be common so my guess is that the chain your Dad has installed should be fine.


A new chain & gear set is only around $29.00 at most of the parts stores. Ofcourse I understand if money is tight then trying to get buy without buying new parts is not easy. As long as the used chain & gears are the ones with the metal gears and the slack is small then you should be OK.



How much can you move the chain from side to side when you grab one side of it and check the slack?

Like someone meantioned before, even a brand new chain setup after being run for a little wail will show some slack.

yeah its a tight budget but i have had alot of free bee's from good friends of mine and well the gear that is the camshfat gear has plastic teeth on it the one for the crankshaft dosent

Some slack in the chain does not hurt anything as long as the cam is in the proper position.
You are be better off worring about how to check your cam's position (degreeing the cam) then worring about a small amount of slack in the chain.

The factory service manual gives a test method and specification for measuring timing chain slack and how much is too much, requiring replacement. However their method requires that you remove the timing chain cover. By using trigonometry, their specification translates to 9 degrees of slack in crankshaft rotation back and forth measured at the timing mark. This test can be done on a fully assembled engine, and it is easy to feel by hand when the slack is taken up and any further rotation of the crankshaft would make the camshaft rotate. I personally think the 9 degree specification is too much for best engine operation, and replacement should be done if slack exceeds 6 degrees.
