Slant Six Forum :: Another dumb question/exhaust with Dutra Duels

The open-header-blast was fun when I was 30-something. "How many car alarms will I set off on the way!"
Now, there is a way or two to do it that won't get the car impounded.

To start, leave the stock exhaust in place and have your favorite shop put the Duals and everything else on for you. This requires having a real deal exhaust shop. Folks that really know how things are put together. It ain't going to work out in your favor at some muffler-mill. My guy does customs and rods. He's not cheap, but installing Headers or special stuff doesn't effect the price... much. It's expensive, but it's right. He can do the matching and so forth. This isn't a 45 minute process.

The other way is to fab-up something temporary from your manifold/header/Dutra to a muffler of some sort. You use a few pieces that can go into the trunk for next time. Flex pipe and the like. Don't be tempted to drive around with flex for long periods unless you breath something other than oxygen.
You can make something to go a few miles with hose clamps and so forth. Keep your foot out of it!
If you need to take it a long distance, Get it towed, or call in a favor with a buddy that has a trailer and a pickup. I usually borrow my neighbor's trailer or rent one if I'm going long distance.
I always provide some sort of compensation to my neighbor that makes it well worth his generosity. Renting a trailer three times costs as much as a set of new tires for his single axle...Or whatever else he might need at the time. He's a roofer, so the odd tool I could never use without injuring myself makes it into the basket when I'm at HomeDepot or Jerry's, for some reason.

How do you guys get the car to the muffler shop to make up the exhaust sytem? trailer? Drive?

I drive..... One of the best part of new headers is the open exhaust blitz to the exhaust shop. Make sure the rear tires are well warmed by the time you get there.

I didn't think of letting the shop put the manifolds on, but I had thought of a Temp setup. I kind of thought some would prefer the open tube sound, but in this day and age they want to ticket you for anything. I have a saying, "THINK, it ain't illegal YET". It's getting almost that bad. I cut two 'header' peices off stock exhaust pipes (flange plus about a foot).. then got a length of the cheapy flexible exhaust pipe and clamped that to the pipe so the exhaust exited under the car, then drove to the exhaust shop... it wasn't loud unless you opened her up (just drive like grandma and it'll just be a loud purr, not 'RAAAAAAAAAPPPPP'...). -D.Idiot

Been there...done that. A few years ago, I was finishing up a few things on my warmed up 383+ 65 Belvedere II. Last two items to be done were run transmission lines to the radiator, and install dual exhaust system to run off the Schumacher headers. When I contacted with trans shop that was going to handle the lines, they didn't want to do the job without the exhaust in place. You guessed it....exhaust shop wouldn't do their job until the trans lines were in. I loaded the car on my trailer and took it to the transmission shop. As they looked over the job, they decided to increase their initial estimate by about half. I declined, drove a couple of blocks to my favorite parts store, and hired them to make up hydraulic lines for the trans. Two hours later I trailered the car to the muffler shop. They tried to force me to turn over the keys so they could start the engine to make sure their system didn't leak when they were done. I explained several times that there was no oil in the engine, water in the radiator, and only limited fluid in the trans/converter. They did the exhaust in a morning, called me, and I returned to pick the car up. One of the new mechanics on site confided that a couple of his co-workers had tried to start the car against my wishes. The boss and I had a heated conversation, but it all worked out in the end. Trailer the car and have the system installed.
