Would it make a difference on gas mileage and horsepower? And is it a hard job to replace the gasket by yourself?

Very.

Makes everything else easier to deal with once you get the vacuum/manifold leaks fixed. This helps to smooth out running and better MPG, power and easier to adjust knowing there's no leaks left. Plus don't have to worry about lean cylinders pinging to death.

Get Aussie gaskets. Have both intake and exhaust bolted together ground flat as DD have said.

I had carb to manifold leak that added extra 600rpm to the base idle, incidently this is what is incrediably hard on auto transmission while engaging - wham! Was new hard gasket (very old type aka: NOS), and carb base warped, solved by lapping this flat on 400 grit sandpaper and glass and using fresh dark gray paper gasket on carbed 2.2 (1987 caravan).

I just changed all my gaskets over Christmas. I used the REMFLEX Graphite gaskets this time and they made a "huge" difference in tuning. They use much less torque to seal. Your not as apt to over torque which causes manifold cracks. I tried the Aussie gaskets as well but had a water leak out of the head, last exhaust stud. It delaminated and dissintigrated the Aussie gasket.

I changed all three gaskets, the long intake/exhaust, stove box and exhaust pipe. It is not hard to do at all. I have pictures if you need them. Send me your email and I will share them.
