I currently have a 14" x 3" open element air cleaner installed.

Could I expect any ET gains from removing the air cleaner all together, or is my cleaner pretty big all ready and not much should be expected?

Ignition timing.
Are most of you guys finding that max power, or should I say, low ET, is with your timing set at pinging backed down a couple of degrees?

Leave the air cleaner on. Removing it is only going to hurt your piston rings. What can help is an enclosed air cleaner with a sufficiently large duct to feed the engine cool air rather than preheated under hood air.

Lots of testing needs to be done to determine optimum timing. Test, make ONE change and then retest.

Bren,

Run the K&N substack air horn under it. My son is running one and has found it to helps 3 to 4 tenths. Infact he went up from 3" to a 6" K&N for another tenth.

Are you still running the SL6?

If so 30 degrees. Hopefully you have that cam advanced some, like 4 to 6 degrees.

If your pinging did you retard the cam?

On that motor, I would start at 26 deg total mech, and would not go over 30. Air cleaner could help or hurt depending on jetting and element. I remove air cleaner once every 2-3 trips to the track to see if any difference. Never more than 0.1, and usually nothing.

That's were the substack makes a difference, otherwise that's what we found to be true.
