Why do you want to yank the 318 in favor of a slant six? I wouldn't think it would worth the effort of swapping out the k-member and transmissions to do it. Unless your 318 is shot I guess. Are you looking for better fuel economy? Just curious.

Does your 73 have the spool type engine mounts?
The swap can be done without a K-frame change if the car has the spool type mounts but some special mounts will have to be made.

I did this on a "street racer" years ago and my 68 B-cuda race car also had this feature.
With that car, I could swap engines from a SL6 to a V-8 in about 4 hours. I would play "mind games" with the people at the local race track by running and 'showing-off' the car with the Slant-6 one week and then coming back and running 12s with the V8... the exhaust "note" always gave it away to the "smart" racers.

The photo below shows the driver's side "adaptor mount" I made to put the SL6 onto the V8 K-frame

Well, I'm doing it because I want to race a slant 6. Doc, I'll check to see what mounts I have, but I'm not really sure just what a spool mount is?
Thanks.

There are a lot of slant six cars still out there wouldn't be easier to start with one of those? I mean even a volare would be cool enough if all I wanted to do was make six cylinder power. Just trying to save time which is money to put towards your engine.

The spool mounts have bolts that run through the middle of the rubber insulator, the bolts fit into two "forks" that are welded to the K-frame.

The other common type of mounting are cushion mounts which are blocks of rubber between the K-frame and the mount bracket that bolts to the engine. The mount shown in the photo is a spool mount.

Doc,

Very cool adaptor and I like the head game!

Were you running a single exhaust with both engines?
or dual?

What diameter pipe or pipes?

Yes, the exhaust was the biggest problem with the SL6 to V8 to SL6 swaps.

I had a single exhaust set-up on the SL6 and duals on the V8.
I ended-up with short pipes and glass-paks that dumped-out before the rear axle. Had to swap exhaust systems along with the engine / trans combo.

I'm thinking tha5t these folks may have mounts that will allow your swap without K-member issues. http://www.engine-swaps.com/

Worth a look and perhaps a phone call anyway!

Keep us posted!

What's wrong with the 318? What are you going to do with it?
