THE BLACK SHEEP HERE AGAIN

i've just been given some elgin vavle springs apprently the fit slant six i looked up the specs and i am not sure there 340 v8 with damper ?
i tryed them aginst a retaner and it seems to hang over the outside by quite a bit .. like 60" all the way around do i need a different retainer ??

i am trying to find the reson my sping judt dont look right with the retionors ive got ... the outsdie size ive got is 1.494ish with a I.D of 1.080

hi black sheep, the inner dia is the same on the stock springs and the 340 springs (mopar p4120249 red with a damper)i know you have elgin, but they are the same as the 340 springs. to sit properly on the 8 degree spring retainers. . the wire dia is thicker on the 340 springs with less coils . to keep the inner dia the same to fit the retainer ,the spring od goes from 1.39 stock to 1.50 od ,so the spring overhangs the retainer all around , but is centered inside on the retainer. ron

Don't worry about a little spring exposure around the retainer, they work fine that way.

Carefully check the clearance between the top of the valve guide and the bottom of the retainer, around the keeper area. This tends to hit when using a higher lift cam.

All valve stems wiggles like twanged strings. So keep this in consideration also.

HEY ALL

i got given a slant head for helping a guy rebuild his 383 . not fun too many pistons ,,,,it a pn220635 part number thing but the retainers are different to the other ones`ve got there alot thinner (55-60"thou thick) and the 340 spring ive got fit a lot better only .30"thou overhang .. i am a little worreid about how thin they are ..

I have never-ever broken a spring retainer.
What are your spring pressures, on the seat and at full valve lift?

If these springs install at this rating, you will be fine.
They will be fine even if installed slightly "taller", like at 1.700 "on the seat".
How much valve lift is on your cam?

THE Cam i have just got in the mail today has 450" lift -the 15" lash so it`s 435" actual vavle lift .. its a camtech cam stage 3 ..
