I had a leak from the bowl of my Holley 1920 carb. I bought a rebuild kit and installed the gasket for the bowl. I just tried to start the valiant. It started, but I had gas pooring from the bottom of the bowl. Any tips on how to seal this properly? Thanks, John |

Sure....... Our local carb shop guru sold me a bunch of the bowl gaskets since I was swapping jets allot. He said to wipe a thin film of oil on both sides before installing it. Be sure that there is no gasket residue left from the old gasket. I clean that small sealing bead with a tooth brush. Also check to make sure the bowl is not warped from over torquing. You just need to snug it up. I usually go around about 4 times lightly so I don't over torque and warp the assembly. |

Ok. I was pretty carful when I cleaned off the old gasket, so it was clean. I just tried the oil tip and it is still leaking bad. Looking at the cover it appears to have been torqued down excessively. The tabs for the screws are bent in and holding a ruler against the edge, the corners don't lay flat. This carb was a rebuilt one I got from a speed shop a while back. I used it for about 5 years before I let the car sit. The old gasket pretty much flaked apart. The new gasket and the old gasket are different. The new one fits nicely into the groove on the carb. The old one was sort of a rubber cardboard composite that was quite a bit thicker. So I'm thinking that my two options are to bet some thicker gasket material and make my own or try to get the carter carb I have set up. I have never used the carter. I am having trouble on it with the clip that goes on the accelerator pump. None of them want to hold it to the linkage. |

And a third option (and probably the right thing to do) would be to replace the cover with one that was straight if I can find one cheap. I'm not betting on this though. |

Your third option is good, I had a couple of bowls like that. I have been collecting them. I found a good straight one that I am using now. You could use two or three gaskets sandwiched together with a little black silicone to get you by. Let the sandwiched gaskets cure over night under a book or a heavy weight. I did that originally before I found a nice bowl. It lasted for a year, then I started swapping jets every week and tracking results. I went to the carb shop and bought a handful, buck a piece. |
