Well last night me and my dad got on the timming cover oil pan and put in the oil pump so i suppose next of all is going through the head i will take some pictures when i can |

Take lot's of pictures, you'll appreciate it later! Best of luck, I can remember building my first engine when I was 17 (three years ago, hah). Are you planning any performance? A 17 year old with a die grinder, a port and polish kit, and a little bit of time can do some good stuff! |

well this is my first engine rebuild and im 17 and i think im just keeping my motor stock which is nothign wrong but yeah money issues lol |

DusterTeen08, A little port matching/gasket matching won't cost you a thing but time. At least open the intake ports up and clean up the exhaust ports a little. The castings are pretty rough. Same for the exhaust manifold. A dremel and some sanding discs won't get you in trouble and will help allot in making some power!  I have done it on mine and it all helps. |

It's understandable to keep it somewhat stock cause of money and being your first engine. The first slant I built that I have in my car now I wish I would've put my money and time elsewhere. The big head's up I know now is to have it hot tanked no matter what. I didn't have to re-bore the engine so I didn't, which also meant I didn't replace the cam bearings (big mistake!). Last, was to upgrade the valves and springs, not necessary for my cam (.44 at 270 duration highly recommended). If you still haven't put your head together by this weekend I will send you some pics of a real simple port and polish job that will take a dedicated weekend, not to much not real quick either. I would recomend this if you got the time and access to a die grinder. In fact, just take your gasket, bolt it loosely to your head so it doesn't move, take the hard stone and clean up enough to match it. I had a iron drop in my number 5 cylinder that took up about an 1/8th of the port  . All the engine's I learned on got a wonderful port and polish treatment, it helped make it breathe so much better than the guys who put the time/money into putting a big cam and monster carb.Like I said before though money is tight at that age and understand that it doesn't go far at all, I had $800 for my first build. The biggest bang for the buck though was getting the head milled .1, in my humble opinion. However, I'm in college and am putting an engine together and in it for $100, and it's already pretty bitchin. So don't rush it and ask around, I spend an hour cleaning the shop for the local engine builder, look over his shoulder from time to time, and can get machining done for next to nothing.
