| Post subject: | Slant Six Engine Test Stand? |
It will be a while before I can put a new engine I am building in a vehicle. And I need to be able to test/tweak the engine before I put it in a vehicle. No car, yet......3 kids in college. Has anyone done this? Modified a roll around engine dolly? Bolted the engine down to a couple of railroad ties? Fabricated something out of 2x4's? Any suggestions/pictures/thoughts? TIA bwhitejr |

It does not that much to hold a SL6 for running & testing... I've actually fired-up engines just sitting on the ground at the junk-yard.  (engine / trans combo, these are pretty stable)I test fire engines on an old shopping cart that has a engine mount eyelet welded to the right side. The hardest thing is having a manual trans. flywheel and bellhousing to allow starter motor mounting. DD |

Do you have a spare K frame laying around? It may be a help to set the engine in it on the ground to hold it "upright" (not straight up n down but with the manifold level anyways) but as has been said, a manual trans flywheel and bellhousing to temporarily bolt on for starter gear and a starter mount point will be a necessity to be able to run it. Also a spare radiator and hoses, with a temporary mount off the front of the K frame would be a good idea if you want to run your engine more than a couple minutes max. |

For the cooling system, I run a "loop" hose from the thermostat cover, back to the water pump and then run a garden hose into the lower heater hose 'bib" on the water pump. I also run a short hose off the top heater hose bib as the exit / hot water "dump-out". I control the engine's temp by adding a trickle of cold water into the engine as it runs, adjusting the cold water flow by the garden hose spicket. It does not take much added cold water to control the engine's temp at idle / low RPM operation. DD |

As Doc says, they can run laying on the ground, I made a stand out of a 2x10...two parallel vertical pieces one one each side of the pan, sliced to hold the engine at the proper slant. Framed up with junk pieces of 4 x4....totally effective, enough so to use for tranny testing on the engine tool rock '64d100 |

I'd like to run my other slant with some tooling positioned at the crank flange. Fire the 67 slant up and turn it out to the large diameter.  That way I don't have to remove the crank and put it on a lathe.  Any other noncrank removal ideas for turning the pilot area out? |

Rock and Doc I would like to see pictures of your "rig" if you have any. Yesterday I drug out the engine mounting brackets and the motor mounts to see if they were designed to symetrically hold the SL6 at that 30 deg angle. They are a little off, but I think I could build somethin out of 2x4's or the like. The pictures would give me a jump-start, and possible keep me out of trouble.  TIA bwhitejr |

Got an engine host? Sling a chain across the two top cylinder head engine removal holes (3/8 -16) fire it up hanging. (low) |

HI Bwhite! Glad to send pics...mine eventually got 4 blowup tires from harbor freight so it is easy to roll around, then in its last iteration I got real fancy and put it on one of those cheap hydraulic table carts so I could lift it to whatever level was convenient at the time for whatever I was fiddling with.
