Not sure where to post this!? The power steering on my 1973 Dart works great! But...it runs the pump dry in about 10 miles! I can see it on the floor of the garage in the mornings and it seems to be about halfway between the pump and the steering gear. But when I inspect that area I can't find a wet spot on any components (the area is dirty from the fluid leak, but no clue about where it's coming from). I'm not opposed to rebuilding it (I'm a pretty good mechanic) but I can't figure out where to rebuild! Any hints on what to look for? Thanks! ________ vaporizers |

You could have just a line leaking. Check for leaks while the engine is running. Or have someone work the steering right and left while you watch. It has to be squirting somewhere if it leaks down that fast. Danny |

Might be a hole in the pressure line. It will leak worse, when running and building bressure, by turning the wheel. Watch for fluid spraying, while someone else turns the wheel with the engine running. |

My Saginaw pump developed a big leak right at the shaft seal, and when from full to empty in a couple of miles. It was easier to rebuilt it than a carb, but I did have a pulley puller kit from Harbor Freight that worked well. One trick to note is to also read the small caveats on the back side of the instructions (for minor O-ring thickness changes during the production run) before, rather than after, you put it all together. Also, beware of being palmed off with 3/4" rather than the proper 11/32" return line. My high presure line fitting was rusted solid and I wrecked it getting it off, but an aftermarket replacement was available w/o much trouble. |

Thanks guys, No line leaking with the engine running that we can see. In fact, we can't see a leak at all with the engine running. I know there has to be one! Next step will be to clean the pump and box completely then check again. By the way, where can I get a pump rebuild kit and/or gear box seals? I'm not sure if this is a Saginaw or national pump. The car is a '73 Dart 318. ________ health store |

Do these have the "Power Assist" cylinders under the car? They could leak on the ground and not wet anything under the hood. |

Assist cylinders were truck-only. |

My high pressure hose was leaking. Try replacing that. |

I replaced one for a buddy over the summer, on a Voyager minivan, that, of all places was leaking from a hole rusted in the reservoir. |

i was going to reccomend that its tough to find a leak when everything is wet and dirty. If you cant pinpoint it powerwash the whole system and then take it home and put it up on stands in the front so you can look from all directions good luck hope you find the leak

It is easier when everything is clean. It may not leak much except while you are actually moving the wheel. Also if it’s a hose that’s been rubbed through, the rubbed spot is laying against something (the something that rubbed a hole it it) that disperses it without a visible squirt. You may have to gently bend, move or tug on the hoses. I’ve looked and looked for a leak like that before until I accidentally touched something that made it show up. Another thought is that it is a very slow leak but when you filled the reservoir - you only filled the reservoir. As soon as you started using it, it pumped all of the fluid into the lines and now the reservoir is empty again. Danny |

Just a thought but have simular problem on one of my /vans.Turns out its coming from top of steering box.Hardly left any fluid spots around box, sort of squirted out and didn't get on anything except the ground. Finally noticed just a bit of fluid around top of box,I mean just a touch of fluid.Only squirts out when steering is moved, you can watch it all day long and no leaking till someone rocks the steering while you're watching.Oh well just another thing to fix ![]() |
