 Post subject: Coating headers

After I check fitment I plan to thermal coat the headers here locally. Is there anything specail I should look for in regards to type, method, ect. I know nothing about it. Just hear theres a place here that can do it. I what them to last, hold down heat and look real nice. What do I tell them I want? Or is that what I tell them?

i'm no expert about headers, but. . . .

i have heard that the ceramic coatings can allow condensation to collect between the coating and the steel tube. if u run the car a lot, and boil the moisture out, no problem. if u park it most of the time, different story, rusting out.
it was suggested to me to have my headers "aluminized".
i stayed with bare steel i admit, i don't live in a snowbelt or a tropical rain forest area.

I am not sure what to tell them you want, except what you just stated yourself. But what I can tell you is that after you have them coated, it is very important to run them through a break in stage. What I mean is the header have to run the heat cycles after put in the engine to cure them. If this is not done you will have problems out of them. Basicaly you heat them up with a short trip around the block with light cruizing (very short trip), then let them cool down. Then the next trip take them to the piont of getting them a little hotter, then let them cool down. Each trip you are trying to incress the heat a little more, then letting them cool down. This will cure the coating and it will last & look much better.


People have had problems with taking coated headers and putting them on a race engine, or a dyno for a tune, then they just throw it to the engine and it does something to the coating that kills it from to much heat to quick.



As far as what type coating to get I would talk to them and tell what you just said here. See what they offer/recamend and bounce that info back to others and see what you find out. Also post at the TurboForum and Moparts forum because alot of the guys at these forums have had expeirance withj getting alot of headers coated. I am not sure about using a local coater unless you can see there results first hand of the product after coating. One thing about sending them out to a well known coater is there will be more info and feedback about the results from others. Even thought it may take longer, or cost more.


I would also run the headers that you choice before coating to see if they work and perform to your needs and have no problems such as leaks or what not. Then any problems that need correcting can be done before money is spent to make them look purdy.


The guys at the TurboForum I was talking about have to build a lot of header from scratch so there is much feedback from them.
