Hello folks,

In May of 05 Slant Six Dan provided a list of vacuum cans for slant dizzies.
Because I am creating a table of data as developed in my dizzies, I wanted one more data point in addition to those he provided. I wanted to know WHEN the advance occurred as different numbers of turns were made to "unscrew" the adjustment inside the can, using an allen wrench.
The when lets me visualize the curve before I put the dizzy in a sun machine and plot it.

For instance, the VC 208 I recently bought, with an 11R on the arm, operates as follows when installed on the dizzy and with vacuum applied with a Fisher vacuum pump:

Number of turns "unscrewed" in. Hg over which advance is applied

0 1 - 5
1 1 - 7
2 3 - 7
3 4 - 11
4 5 - 11
5 5.5 - 12
6 7 - 13

In my opinion this seems to validate Argentina's long standing advice to unscrew the adjustment 4 or 5 turns, but that is because I wanted the vac. advance added in that range of vacuum.

Anyone else plotted another can?

Good idea! We need more matrix like this for tuning the SL6.

Where did you get you VC208. I can't find anymore out here in the Puget Sound region. NAPA can't help me. I would like to get a spare.

Yeah, some clarification would be good. Zero turns unscrewed, you show an advance range of 1-5" vacuum. Does this mean the arm starts to retract at 1" of vacuum and is fully retracted at 5 inches of vacuum?

Dan, as usual has it right.

I hate the email transmittal scrunched up the columns, but for instance as Dan says, when my VC 208 with its adustment screw fully clockwise or "in" (what I called Zero (0) turns) then had vacuum applied, vacuum began to pull the advance arm at 1 in. Hg. and no more advance was added past 5 in. Hg (the arm didn't move any more.

if the adjustment screw was out (conterclockwise) 3 turns, and vacuum was applied, the arm began to move at 4 inches and stopped moving at 11 inches.

I applied vacuum up to 25 inches to be sure movement had ceased, and repeated the test 10 times for each setting, 0 - 6 turns. I used a Fisher lab pump because that pump is a lab standards. I did match my Mitymite up against the Fisher and they were exactly the same in my working range, suggesting you could use your Mitymite at home. (I will!)

I did a steady vacuum application, not a stomp the gas pedal study, but I don't see a physical reason why the can would work different at stomp vs. steady, vacuum IS vacuum. I also don't see why one 208 would work much different than another, but of course they could vary. I was just curious about whether 4 turns or 5 turns was magic for me, and I may go back and do some half turn study.

Dan, I do have two more cans and will do them now that spring has hit down south and it is fun to sit in the sun and do such piddling. I got my 208 at Carquest and surprising to me, that is the only one they could get and it was about $10. I am going to test some NOS Mopar 6.5, 7.5 and 8.5 cans next. I wanted the Wells Lamont and couldn't get it locally.

The local Carquest tells me they can order this part (standard VC208). I never thought to right it down but Napa crossed it over to a Eclin number and said they could order it, a 3435 or somthing like that. I could get the number from them if it would help, not thinking I didnt write it down when they told me they didnt have it but could order it.

I ordered a wide field of advance cans a long while back trying to dial in the curve for the Hpak duster, and one thing I noticed is the cans are all distributed by the same place... it didn't matter what store I bought them from, or who 'packaged' the box (Standard, Niehoff, Echlin, etc..), the cans were all stamped in black 'ink' on the distributor side of the can with AH-1, AH-11, AH-8...

So who's making the cans now?
