Post subject:  anti-musty bomb.........
Since it's been cold out I've left all the vents closed (usually left the 2 under dash ones open)


Well the cars been sitting for awhile and it has that old car musty smell


Is there something like a flea-bomb that you can set off inside?


I'm pretty sure the smell is the old burlap in the old seats, so a spritz on the top of the seat isn't going to much, thus I want something that can permeate the whole seat

i got same prob from my wiper seals poopin out... i wanna know too, my only advice is garage and space heater to dry it out... i dont have a garage....

I worked at a dealership once and someone brought us a new car that a pet had died in while they were gone on vacation (in another car).

You couldn’t get near it, outside, with all the windows closed. We couldn’t keep it in the shop at all. Someone had to wear a mask and completely strip the interior. There was nothing left but metal and the dash. Scrubbed it with everything we could find but it would still knock your hat off when you opened the door..

Yours doesn’t seem quite that bad Ed, but it just reminded me how many times I’ve wished we'd had Febreze back then.

Most of the sprays just mask the smells.
If it's just the musty smell, there's really nothing like a good cleaning, drying, and airing out.
Clean it thoroughly, then leave it in the sun all day with the windows down and the doors open. Sunlight, heat, and wind. This works better in the summer, but it's worth a shot even in the winter. Besides, it's cheap.

As far as recycling critters, that smell is VERY hard to get rid of. Anyone see the Mythbusters episode with pigs in a 'Vette? Ewwwwwwww!

You can try to use a air ionizer/uv air filter from your home (if you have one) , these work miracles in smoky hotel rooms and in homes. The uv will kill the smell and the ionizer "cleans it up" .

If you're very desperate, a fellow I know tried the following trick and claimed it work very well. It is very dangerous and I have never tried it.

Basically, he had a house that stank from pets and couldn't get the smell out, so out of frustration he closed all the windows, mixed ~1gal Clorox and ammonia 50-50 in the toilet, and ran out as fast as he could, then let it stand a few days, then aired out the house. He claims it worked well; the chlorine gas eliminated the odors.

I warn you that chlorine gas is toxic and could attack many parts of the interior, especially the plastic chrome and bright metal, so I would test a *tiny* amount in a sealed container with a few typical expendible parts for damage first. It is very reactive and will kill nearly anything. I would also scale the amount down by the volume of the car relative to the volume of a house.

Again, I'd only try that it if all else fails. If you do try it, please let us know what happens.

Place a few open boxes of soda in it and let it sit for a few days. I'd even dump some on the seats and carpet, and vacuum it up after it sits. Unless the smell is really gross, the soda does a good job.

Many years ago, I had a '55 Plymouth with a leak that allowed water to soak the front carpet. I didn't notice it for several days, and when I finally noticed, the entire carpet was covered with meadow mushrooms...hundreds of them! If you want to smell musty, try growing a crop of mushrooms in a closed car.

I'm sorry I've got to stop this rite now.DO NOT try the chlorine gas trick,please :shock: I worked in the pulp and paper industry for 25 plus years and that sh@t is nothing to mess with unless you're a chemical engineer,even them NO.Besides the obvious inhalant problems your car,house what ever will stink of chiorine for a long long time and I'd rather smell the musties than that crap.Also chlorine mixed with even the tiniest amount of water(H20 from the air,breathing etc.)makes a corrosive that will eat up more than plastic/chrome.I understand that there isn't that much chlorine in household bleach,but still don't take the chance,please.This is all IMHO of course :roll: I spent alot of days/nights/weekends/birthday parties,etc replacing bad fittings,valves,sch80 piping that chlorine+H2O had eaten away :( Go with the scrubing,upholstry cleaner,frebreeze and rent one of those ion exchangers from a urent place.Did I mention I was on the HazMat team for a 2 county responce unit? That doesn't make me an expert but it does make me afraid,very afraid :wink:

Sniffed around and it's from under the front seat..........

Anything applied from above won't seep down that far, so I'll try some baking soda....

Also since the humidity has dropped, there's less smell...........


Gotta love old burlap... :?

An old cheap standby: Find a bar of soap with a smell you can stand. Irish Spring, whatever. Partially open one end, not enough for the bar to come out. Put the soap under the seat and leave it as a timed-release smellgoody.

Maybe antiskunk smell spray? you can buy some stuff at petsmart or vet, or mix hydrogen peroxide with baking soda and a shot of soap.
