Post subject:  77 carter 2bbl adjustments

Hi everyone, We have recently installed a Supersix setup on a 1966 Dart Gt with a 225 motor. We have Dutra duals and 2 1/4 exhaust. Auto trans and factory rear. The carb is a rebuilt carter BBD from a 77 Aspen. I have a "slight" lag just as pressure is applied to pedal but she really comes alive just past lag. vaccum is at a steady 20+ inches at idle. Timing at balancer is 8*btc. Should I look at replacing jets? Can someone direct me to a description of adjusting Accel pump if that may be problem. I'm not familiar with the Carter and hate to make things worse. She really runs great past that small lag and I have Mr Dutra along with the many of you who have answered questions and offered tips to my son and I building this Dart. Thanks, Ed & Jeremy

Look into the carb and work the throttle to see how well the accelerator pump is working. You should see a squirt of fuel enter the carb venturies when you first move the throttle, if the pump shot is late, you will get the lag. Look at the linkage to be sure the movement at the throttle is transferred directly to the pump's plunger and not lost in linkage slop or deflection.

Another thing to check is distributor advance, do this with a timing light and the engine warm and running. Again, when you first start opening the throttle, the timing mark should "jump" into more advance, this is the vacuum advance doing it's job. If vacuum advance is slow to kick-in, you will need to test the vacuum advance "pod" on the distributor, to be sure it is working correctly.
