Post subject: | Oil pressure flutter due to nonbaffled oil pan |
If I run Eileen at the normal oil level (full) and stand on it, the massive amounts of HP throws the oil away from the oil pickup and I get a little dip and flutter in oil pressure. It starts out at 55psi and dips on lanch to 35psi and fultters around 40-45psi for about 2 seconds and comes back up. If I add about 1.5 quarts over full it won't dip and flutter and this is where I've been running it, espesaily at the track. Questions: 1. What are the ramifications of running it overfull? 2. How much HP am I losing due to windage because of the over full condition? 3. Can an oil pan with baffles be install easly with out removing the engine? 4. Doug do you have one that will just bolt on? |

Running over full can aerate the oil (not good). Don't know on your car, but on my 65 Valiant it is a pain to R&R the oil pan in the car (but it can be done). The pan has a dropped sump and baffles. |

Unfortunately, you'll have to pull the engine to replace the pan, which is less work than trying to do this with it in the car. Deepening the sump about 1" and adding some baffles will cure this problem. I also make sure the pickup is right on the floor of the pan and slightly toward the rear of the pan. If you deepen the pan, you must also drop the pickup using pipe fittings. Best to overfill your oil as you have done, which will cost some HP (10??), but will keep your engine from spinning bearings!
