Post subject:  Valve Spring ?

Doug, Which BB application would have a pretty healthy spring? I have an installed height of 1.84 on the exhaust valves with the cromo retainers i used. the 340 springs are a bit weak, even with .060 worth of shim. i did not feel comfortable with more shim than that cause it looked like the spring may have been able to walk out of the seat. they will begin to float at 5200 with muffler, and ok to 5,900 without muffler.(odd!?!) cam is still pulling hard, need more spring! intakes are stock size with a lot of back-cut (no lip!) and good 3 angle grind. exh valves are 1.50 sbc with new guides, hard seats, and 45* grind. i opted not to cut the spring seats after seeing some cut a bit too far, and falling out upon spring instalation! i like my motors to live, if even for a short while. this one has about 14,000 miles on it now and 200 passes! another is in the works ;) chad

I have ben using the "stock replacement" (single coil with damper)HP 383-440 springs. You can get some really stiff double and triple coil units.

Note that the Hemi springs are also the taller units (Note that 426 Hemi's "eat" valvesprings like crazy so the swap meets are full of good set for us SL6ers, (we only need 12 so a set with 1 or 2 "smashed" ones works fine.)

Drop-in on the head machinest and see if he has some used ones they are throwing away!
