Post subject:  Ways to hookup at the track.

I seem to have traction problems at this point and I still havn't installed the 3.55 gears or new exhaust. I did lower the tire pressure to 20PSI which helped some. Whats next? I am running the KYB shocks all around, is there something better shock wise to help with traction? I have NO wheel hope, just very smooth wheel screeching. Using my timing computer and measureing only 60 foot times I find that if the tires don't break free I run 0.18 faster.
What should I be looking at suspension wise?
I don't want to run slicks or cheater slicks. I am really tring to make it run 14's in true street form. I can live with low tire pressure as you can always just pull in to a service station and pump back up. Open exhaust is not really in street form, unless one where to install one of those electric exhaust cutouts. :roll:

Do you have a limited slip differential? If not that's a must. Also, they make much better tires than you're using. The original BF Goodrich Drag Radial is street friendly. I have some in 235/50R15 that worked well on my mid 14 second '66 Dart.

For great 60 foot times... you need a soft tire compound, soft spring rates and soft shocks that allow for weight transfer.
As already notes, a posi (sure grip) is a "must" for drag strip starts.

I got the posi. Are the KYB's that I have hurting the hookup? I am not sure which tire your recommending. Orignal BFG? Can you provide a link?

What tires do you have now - size and brand/model?

Depending on size, I can recommend some tires. NT555s might be good, but not sure about every day use.

I am running the BFG Radial TA 235-60-15 on an 8" wheel with 4.5" offset. I really can't fit anymore width in the wheel well. I am very close to the spring at this point.

I can't seem to find the life expectancy of this tire but it likely around 60K. I need something that will be used for daily driving and will be safe on the street, but I don't mind a 30K tire if it'll hookup. I do need a simalar raised white letter tire, as I have the same brand on the front.(215-60-15)

BFG radial T/As are know to racers as one of the worst tires to run traction wise. In some cases, you hook up better with cheap radial tires than with BFGs. Your best bet would be to get Mickey Thompson Drag Radials. I know you don't want cheater slicks, but these are the way to go.

I have to agree with david my 245/60's suck at the track even at 18 psi.
and that is with a stock converter and trans, put more behind it and you loose more traction!

I beleive I found the tires your recommending but there not RWL. Ibelieve I am really close with the tires I have to hooking. Just looking for something just a little better, not something that with hold a 11- 12 second car.

I was talking to someone about unclamping the rear portion of the leaf spring. I'll have to climb under and see what I got. Maybe the BFG TAs will hook with some lite suspension work.

Superstock springs (3000 lb) would help you out alot and if you use the front adjustable mounts from Mancini you can keep your stock ride height.

I agree that BFG T/As suck, but my 64 hooked with 245/60-14 T/As with a good 7-10 sec burnout. Everybody says that doesn't help, but that's prolly only on brand new tires and not ones with an oxide layer from street/hwy driving - need to get rid of that first pass of the day at the track, then minimal burnout after that.

Maybe some suspension tuning with clamps on the front leaf packs would help. I don't think ANY serious performance tires are made with raised white letters, only poser tires.

Nitto NT555s might be the way to go, although they will not last 30K on the street - maybe 10-20k? Maybe the MT ET Streets, as Doc suggested? Those might wear OK (maybe??) and hook well. After the $$ you've spent, tires are not a place to skimp. They are, IMHO, the most important part of any car.

why not just swap some rear wheels on for the drags so you can keep your regular street tires as you have now? Then you can have the best of both?
