Post subject:  appropriate square wrench for oil galley plug?

Hi all,

I gotta put oil galley plugs back in my motor. They are some sort of recessed square head design. What works as a wrench for these buggers?

nope, too small of a hole/too big of a wrench.

I was thinking of grinding down an old 3/8 extension.

A short (2" or 3") piece of appropriately-sized square bar stock from the hardware store, driven by a 12-point socket or simply gripped in the jaws of a Vise-Grips.

I was thinking about that approach, Dan. If I do that, I might as well spring for recessed hex or torx keyed plugs.

I refuse to believe Ma Mopar used these goofed up plugs without some engineering or reasons. They usually had some great engineering reason for their non standard quirks.

Everyone used them for the same reason they used steel freeze plugs rather than brass. Cheap!

Besides, she's not your real mom.

No special engineering reason; they used them because they were cheap and readily available.

If your going to the hardware store for some square stock now would be a good time to "engineer" one better than Ma.Look for some quality hex plugs, not that it's much better but you could smile knowing you did it better. And she is to our mother and somedays she can be one also

There are 8pt sockets avaiable to drive square nuts or square stock.
