| Post subject: | 4 speed hump |
Just pulled the carpet and padding to beginf to pull the hump. Did a search and some on here have said to cut out extra when pulling it "just in case". But I can get my gasket scraper between it and the floor pan and can see the tack welds. Can't I just pop those? |

Yes, you can just cut the spot welds. A spot weld cutter makes the job easy. |

I've seen 3 ways to do it...1) Spot Weld cutter drill bit is the easiest, but costs a bit of $$$ 2) you can use a large drill bit get halfway through to weaken the spot weld then use a large screw driver to 'pop' them (this allows you to put a weld tack in the original spots, like doing a floor pan repair) 3) the quick and easy way is getting an air chisel, an angle grinder and cutoff wheels and chaw the thing out taking some extra meat 'just in case', or if rich, whip out your lincoln plasma cutter and burn it out (much nicer than the oxy acet torch kit) 3b) if doing it at a junkyard and there's no cordless sawzall, then I've seen an axe/hatchet used to get the part out (in 10 minutes or less...) |

Sounds like you are taking the hump out of a donor car, right? In that case take a drill with an 1/8" bit and drill the center of the spot welds. Then load the drill with a 5/16" bit or a uni-bit and drill out all of the spot weld. You should be able to remove it with little or no prying. The 5/16" holes you just created in the hump will be the perfect size for strong plug welds. When you install it in your car, set it in place, trace around it, subtract the width of the flange and cut your hole. |

Thanks Y'all. All ideas I had thought of as well. I just rememeber after doing a search on the subject that folks were saying to take extra floor and hump material when you cut it out and it didn't really make any sense as this should be a simple removal. Thanks again |

got it out last night wit the angle grinder. Man the factory did some "fudging". Lots of tar to fill some pretty major gaps. |

Ya... and everyone talks about the good old days  Classic cars have 1" slots on fender mounting holes. Even a Kia has perfectly placed holes for fender mounting
