Post subject:  Engine Upgrade
I currently have a 34 plymouth 2 dr coupe. I am now in the process of rebuilding/modifing the car. I decided NOT to do what every one else has done & put a Chevy 350 in it. I have a slant six (225) in it now and I want to give it more horsepower and attitude without sacrificing dependability. Are there performance packages for this engine? Does anyone have any ideas or places that i could go to get ideas. I'd sure hate to put a 350 in.

Sounds like an interesting plan! Do you have a target horsepower goal? Budget? Theme? There were a fair number of drag cars and show cars with the slant six when it first came out, so I was wondering if you were going for a period-correct vibe or wanted to make it look more contemporary.

Do you have a horse power target?
In general, the SL6 responds well to additional compression combined with better air flow. (head porting, more cam, more carburation and free flowing exhaust)

Let's see some pictures of said rod. I love these cars and I think it's great that you're thinking outside the box for a power train. Is it going to be open engine? fenderless? chopped? Spill it. There's lots to be gleaned from this forum and many people starting on the ground floor like yourself.

Ken, good for you!!! My son and went to Goodguys ( Indy) last summer and decided on a father son project-27 ford T roadster! We wanted a unique power plant that we could build on a budget. We went to see a Mopar friend of mine (Rick Allison- A&A - Hemi and Wedge crossram intake manufacturer) looking for an old style hemi. After much discussion a truely unique option appeared- a 225 slant out of a 72 Dodge Dart. I haven't looked back since! While I am still very new to the forum I can say you have definitely have come to the right place! People are very welcoming and genuinely want to help. A lot of the guys are bracket racers and most seem to own cars and trucks that came with a stock slant ,so it is nice to see another Hot Rodder so to speak. The best thing you can do is read,read read! Love to see some pics of your project and let me know if you attend any motorsports in Indy. Welcome And good luck with you project! :D

My target horsepower would be around 300 or a little more. I want it to sound good and have attitude. I'll still want to drive it around to car shows and cruises, so it'll have to be roadworthy and dependable. I'm not on a budget. Yea, sure if I'm going out to buy the wife a washer & dryer but not regarding my slant six. Am I bad or what! I'm leaning toward giving the car a cruisen look of the 50's and 60's. I'm not sure but I'm leaning toward the fenderless look, I'll have to see what it looks like when the fenders are off to decide whether or not I want to keep the hood. A friend of mind has a 1928 ford delivery van w/a 289 hoodless and it looks pretty sharp. That's the car i'd like to smoke w/the six. He's an avid ford man.
Pictures are forthcoming. I have a lot of things I still have to do. Install a descent size fuel tank, move the battery to the trunk, replace the front end, and install a radiator. I'm pretty new at this, but it's fun. Anytime I can work on a car when I want to and not have to is a blast. I have three daughters and they all have cars, need I say anything else.

OK, that is good info.
The real issue is available fuel quality so I will assume that we are going to use 91-92 pump premium, not a pump / race gas mix.
Focus areas on this engine build:
-Good cylinder head porting work with oversize valves.
-A careful selection of static compression ratio and cam.
-Increased displacement (.100 o/s ??)
-Decreased rotation weight - long con rod engine?

300 HP out of a "pump gas", street / strip SL6 is somewhat challenging.
You may want to build a milder 225 - 250 HP engine and get it to 300 - 350 with a shot of N2O.

Ken, how much does your coupe weigh? A one horse per cube slant as Doc suggests could be the streetable situation that you are looking for. The roadster I am planning should weigh quite abit less then the Dart that provided my engine. This coupled with the right diff. gearing should provide a streetable yet great performing ride. I would look forward to this type of build(225-250 hp) outlined in the engine matrix thread!

200-250 isn't going to be terribly difficult, I think lot's of people have done that. 300 na is really difficult, I gave up trying and just straight to boost idea. The Nitrous might be a nice add-on to smoke your friend. Spend the time on the NA build including lots of money into the head, than don't forget about the outside the engine in your budget ie. headers, igition, ect. Good luck bounce ideas off us cause in this case it will be easier to do stuff that has worked than try to be adventrous.

Project cars similar to mine (23t and 27t's) are in the 1500 to 2000 lb range. These have glass bodies, of course. Even if you go full fendered I wonder if your car would weigh less then a typical street A body? Anyway, sounds like a cool project and I hope you rub that Ford guy's nose in it! :twisted:
