Post subject:  Torqueflite A-904 maintenance

Hi,

I am working in my automatic transmission. First, I am going to change the filter, gasket and fluid (to Dexron III), to do a good maintenance.

At the same time, I want to change the radiator installed for an original one used I have found.

It looks like this automatic transmission is very delicated, and it is dangerous if for any reason some dust come inside it.

Are there any right way to renew the filter, gasket and fluid?
How can I clean the used radiator before install it?

Regards

These transmissions are the toughest in the business. Just remove the cover and replace the filter and gasket. As for the radiator, blowing it out with air should work unless it has been lying around in the dirt.

There are transmission cooler flush "systems" - basically aerosol cans with a fitting for the cooler line. I've never seen or looked for them in the parts stores, though. Rebuilt automatic transmissions sometimes come with them, and the instructions may require their use.

Many thanks.

As soon as I have a free weekend, I will replace the radiator and I will change the fluid, gasket and filter.

I was afraid because I read somewhere that any dust could be very dangerous for the Torqueflite.

The early torqueflites are some of the toughest and most reliable automatic transmissions ever built. As long as you have reasonably clean workspace and use reasonable care you'll have no issues with introducing dirt into the transmission.
