Post subject:  engine over .060 good idea or not

I recently purchased a 64 barracuda in rough shape and have started refurbishing it. It has a 225 slant six with a carter two barrel with electronic ignition. The block is a 1973 and has been over bored to .040 already. The number five cylinder is scored and needs to be bored to .060 to make it right. I have never worked with a slant six before and was wondering if any one has any experience with engine reliablilty after 0.060 over bore. In short should I be looking for a different block or go with this one.
I also have done some porting and polishing to the head and will be taking it in for a valve job and would like to raise the compression slightly but still want to use cheap gas does anyone have some experience on how much to take off when the head is surfaced and still run low octane gas.

Thanks Joe

slant blocks can go even bigger, but .060 is an OK number (I just did this to a 1979 cast crank block due to rust... giving me a 232 slant six...)

good luck on the project.

yes a 0.060 or even a 0.080 over is safe this is the biggest stock piston available for a slantsix. for the compression keep the head chamber as close to stock as possible the best way is to cut the deck surface while you are having the block done. you will have to do the math to get the number you need cut but if you want to use pump gas then 9.5/1 is good so you will have to cut .120in off the deck that should put the piston 0.060 down the bore and the head volume is kept around 58cc to 60cc. just a guess do the math the be sure, good luck. 8)

Thanks for the help. I will go ahead with the block I have. But why should I have the block milled instead of the head? Just curious..

Thanks Joe

Post subject:  Bore

My block is bored .105 over.Biggest thing I found was to get the best block possible(72? truck)The rib behind the water pump is wide then tapers and has 5 freeze plugs.we sonic checked it and all the usual machining .The motor man felt like we could go to almost .180.The other thing is when you need to buy pistons, can you say custom$$$$Almost done1 8)
