Ok, for my first rebuild, I was going to go for economy. I'm planning on using just a standard rebuild kit with the regular cam and stuff so it still has it's low end torque. But, eventually I want to rebuild it for performance. Is it possible to rebuild a 225 to make as much power as the 340 V8? That wold be something, I know I'd lose my low end torque but it would be awesome to do sometime. What's the most anyone here has gotten out of their slant six?

To be honest you will most likely not ever see a slant that out horses a well built 340. On the other hand a 340 is getting hard to come by in good fresh shape. that being said.
Fast forward to the whole car world. I know a lot of guys at the track that have 340/360/440 etc that arent going any fast that most of the slant racers. Why you ask. The engine alone doesnt make your car fast (ask me how I know) If you spend your money wisely and LISTEN to what combos are working then you could be really surprised. A 250HP slant with the right stall converter and shift improved 904 and good gear ratio will SMOKE a lot of V8's.
As for your torque build. I would spend your money on Dutra Dual or Headers/exhaust, Then Head work, Cam it and go. The amount of money a little head work costs is vastly out wieghed by the benifit.
The bottom line is it takes about the same amount of time and money to build a good slant as to rebuild a slant.

Super God,

My build cost about 3,000 with all the machining, balancing, porting and upgrades with the exhaust system, manifolds and carbs and electrical system. It goes pretty quick!
So you might as well plan ahead and build the engine so you can easily upgrade it later (via bolt ons) with out having to tear it down again.

I just wish I had put on the crank scraper and windage tray as these motors spin up they sure create lots of oil misting and extra drag!

My total engine build (Everything) cost about $1800.00... :)
I did alot of work myself....so that cut cost quite a bit.

66aCUDA hit it on the head.....for a torque-street slant, the money spent isn't much more than rebuilding one right.
If I had your goals in mind, I would get that 244(?) Erson cam that Doctor Dodge helped design. Keep the stock valves, and port out the bowls to make a smooth transition.(read up on it if that's new to you), Get the compression up to 8.5 to 1 or so, and plug in a re-curved electronic dizzy(The search function is your friend) along with SlantSixDan's HEI upgrade. Don't forget the 2 1/4" exhaust...
That would be a nice, stout slant six that would run much better than stock.
If your really after "V-8 power" though, you'll have to change more, and spend more. :)
There are guys here that are more than willing to help, but you have to listen! And I can't stress enough the "Search" function.......most of your questions have probably already been addressed!
Good luck!

There are a couple 600+ hp slant sixes, but it looks like most of the slant sixes over 300 or so hp either only make that on the bottle, or are running a turbo. The good thing about turbo engines is that they don't need very much cam - a beefed up motor for a turbo could still be a very docile, streetable motor before you put the turbo on it.

This is simply the my opinion, but the slant is not even close to being in the same class as a 340. Yes you can throw money at the slant to make it compete with a 318 relatively easy, maybe even a 350's from time to time. The 340 is a freakin miracle in itself as far as my knowledge extends, we've always made them excede our expectations. This being said if you honestly want a v8 you should get it before you put any money into the slant, doing this isn't coping out it's getting what you want.
I think Matt said it best everyone I've seen seems to hit a wall at <300hp NA, than shoves on the bottle or a few few turbos. So good luck and if your not extremely familar with engines read what works.

The key to performance from a slant is weight. If you have a 300 hp slant in a 2700lb car you will beat a 400hp 340 in a 3700lb car.

Anyone know a part number for this cam?
