I bought a kit to rebuild it. Can this be done with the steering box and column still in the car?

I've always pulled the steering column out; that's not too hard, and left the steering box there. You'll need to pull the column back some inches, at least, just for clearance to slide the coupling apart. Often, the sliders inside are cleanly broken in two.

The only nearly impossible part is to get the stock cover to stay clipped in place; there's an aftermarket boot that replaces the stock cover that I would strongly recommend.

If you have a supplier and part number, I'll put it in the parts list.

Is there a source for the rubber seal on an early A-body? The ones I've seen are for later couplers and have a different shape.
