Yep, all of the above--depending on where you live this might be illegal, most states want it behind the rear axle or past the rear window. You could always do vertical pipes like in a Little Red Truck

Has anyone ever put made their exhaust exit in front of the rear tire? I'm planning on doing this with my 63 Dart. Any thoughts? |

I once owned a '74 Dart Sport with a 318, and the previous owner had installed duals that exited just behind the doors. It was really nice to hear the exhaust for the first few months, but then ther were times when I got tired of listening to the drone. It got old. I was 22.20 years later, even the duals out the back of my Swinger get on my nerves from time to time. But I wouldn't want a whisper quiet car, either. |

I currently have a cherry bomb exiting right under my seat, but it gets caught on the trailer when I take the car off, so I was just going to add straight pipe, but Then i thought it might be cool to have it exit out the side. I have enough extra pipe around my house to try it out anyway. |

yea it's done on my car right now, but it splits to both sides at about the firewall. i like the way it sounds but i'm 19 and the drone doesn't bother me when i drive. however i could understand why others would disagree when i go under overpasses. |

i did my 63's 2 1/4 " exhaust ,but it seems that the only logical place to put the muffler is right before the axle and therefore it doesn't seem possible to exit out the drivers side in front of the tire. I think that if the muffler is under the floor pan and exiting in front of the tire it will be real close to the ground.my 02.... |

A tardy reply to this, but I checked with the State Patrol here in WA. The cop there told me that exiting ahead of the rear wheel was a safety issue because the Exhaust could come in the window. When we had the 2 1/4 exhaust installed, the muffler guy said it was illegal to exit the pipe ahead of the rear wheel and he would refuse to do it. So, we had the pipe exit under the bumper. On my Ranger with SuperCab, I had the pipe exit ahead of the rear wheel, but on the Ranger, that's about the middle of the pickup bed and no chance of exhaust coming in the window. So, there's the rest of the story. . . |

Yeah, I would definitely not dump the exhaust out the side of the car ahead of the front wheel. It might look tough, but it would be a stinky damnuisance at best and a serious carbon monoxide safety hazard at worst. Maybe on a new car with essentially zero-toxicity exhaust, but not on an oldie. The new-for-'98(?) Ford F-series trucks had exhaust dumping out ahead of the rear wheel, but that was far back from the passenger compartment, and on the passenger side. Still, they changed it to a behind-wheel dumpout a year or two later. |
