I have always thought that my project car motor was a 225, but I might be wrong.

I bought it from a guy who pulled it out of his 68 Dart. He said it was a 170. I looked at the engine ID pad next to the altrnator and read what I thought was a code for a 225.

Block casting number = 2464330-8
According to the tables in the articles this means it is for a pre-68 170 motor.

However, the engine ID pad reads:
PT22 R 217011 46 followed by a maltese cross

I decoded this to mean a 225 motor. however, the 46 is a secondary stamping over what appears to have originally been 34.

Is this a 225 or a 170? I know the maltese cross means .010 factory undersize carnk. Was this a 67 170 that the factory held back and turned into a 68 225? I am confused because I have successfully mated this motor to several post 68 automatic transmissions and never had a problem.

Well, I just measured the stroke and it is indeed a hair over four inches. So it looks like I have a factory 225 motor slipped into a 170 block. Sleeper? :roll:

I thought the Maltese Cross meant that it was a replacement engine (either swapped at the end of the assembly line or warrantee at the dealer)

A "3 freeze plug" 225 is casting number 2463430-xx
Are you sure you don't have some numbers transposed?
BTW, there is no way that a 4.125 (225) crank is ever going to fit in a "low" 170 block.

The decoder book I was using said the 1968 maltese cross meant undersize crank.

Either way, this is a weird factory combo.

UPDATE- Good catch doc. I was transposing numbers. 2463430-8 is the correct number. My mistake for misreading the table.

Ummm....Reed? Think about the above. Wasn't the 170 block about an inch shorter deck height than the 198/225 block? I think a 225 crank & rods would put the piston on the positive side of deck height.
Maybe you've got a 225 restamped with 170 info?

Yeah yeah, bad mistake on my part. I have spent the last few years working on Ford smallblocks, not slants, so I am a bit rusty on my slant knowledge.

Hey, I work on what I own. Life just worked out to where I ended up with two Ford vans. If I could find a slant powered Mopar product that I felt comfortable in, I would happily drive it, but c'est la vie. :wink:

I'm just playing with you Reed. :D
Our other 2 cars are a 94 Mercury tracer and my wifes 89 Celebrity wagon. We have 4 children so if MOPAR had made a wagon with a 3rd seat she would be driving one hense the chevy(I will NEVER own another taurus). The tracer was dirt cheap and hasn't cost us much in the last 3 inspections, gets great milage and the A/C works. I would prefer a Shadow or an Omni style econobox but timing a price dictate what I buy.
The last 4 cars I bought for myself I spent $1080+tags and I am still driving 2 of them.

My family had a Mercury Sable once (the twin to the Taurus). It was a big gold station wagon with a 3rd row seat. We called it the golden turd. Every friday like clockwork it went into the shop. We spent 3 times as much as the purchase price on repairs before we finally sold the piece of crap.
