WELL NICE TO MEET ALL YOU GUYS GREAT FORUM WELL HERES THE STORY IM BUILDING A HAGR DRAGSTER SLANT POWER SO I BOUGHT A SLANT ON EBAY FOR $26.99 THE ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY REBUILT LESS THAN 20 MILES ON O/H SO I TORE IT DOWN TO LOOK SURE THING SPOTLESS ALL NEW BORED 0.30 LOOKS NICE EXCEPT THE PISTONS SIT ABOUT .175 IN THE HOLE THY ARE FLAT TOPS WHY ARE THEY DOWN SO FAR I SEE EVERYONE IS MILLING .100 OFF THE CYL HEADS BUT ID STILL LIKE TO GET THAT PISTON UP TO 0 DECK HIGHT LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS THINK THANKS BILL |

Bill, that's about typical for a stock slant. The original factory static C/R was rated at 8.2:1, and accurate calculations will show that many of them were down in the high 7's for ratio. Fortunately, there's a lot of material on both the deck surface of the block, and the deck surface of the head, so milling is a good option to raise the compression. You might want to peruse the articles section off the main page of this site. Roger |

WELL I SPOKE WITH A GUY AT CLIFFORD TODAY AND HE SAID THERE MUST BE SOME MIX MATCH PARTS IN THIS THING HE CLAIMS HE HAS NEVER SEEN A SLANT WITH THE PISTON ANY FURTHER THAN .040 IN THE HOLE |

I don't think he has ever seen the inside of a slant six. He is sooooooo wrong. A 170 engine is a "zero deck" motor, and most of them have the piston down in the hole by .015 - .040.

This is why you should not talk to anyone at Clifford. My slant is .116 in the hole AFTER I decked the block .060. The reason he never saw one further than .040 is he never has seen a slant with the head off. You have a perfectly normal motor.......really. |

That's OK, we have spell check. Punctuation helps heaps too, but the board doesn't have anything for that. My '73 225 has the pistons .177" down in the hole. My combustion chambers were 62cc so I had .080 taken off the head and will take .100" off the block to get from 7.7:1 up to 10:1. I just hope I have valve to piston clearance! |

ok so the engine is new but stock so i would like to gain as much compression as i can shave th block or head or both and put the biggest cam i can get away with out valve to piston problems so im thinking like 480 lift cam bolt it in check v/c and start milling what ya thaink thanks again bill |

How strong do those pistons look? Are they cast pistons with a steel expansion strut around the pins? Do the pistons have a large cut or drilled holes under the oil ring? Does your budget allow for a nice set of custom made, high compression forged pistons? DD |
