Hey all,

My new 73 4d Dart is in need of a new exhaust system. I want to go 2.25 all the way back with a free flowing muffler. Am I going to be able to find the pipes at regular old parts house, or am I looking at one of the specialty vendors, or custom bent?

Also looking like I need a speedo cable. Getting ALL kinds of noise under the dash. Are these even avalible? Are they riteous expensive? If so I just may try to shoot some lube down the cable and see what happens.

Thanks!

Chris E.

All exhaust work on A-bodies is custom-bent these days, especially if you want non-stock pipework. Pick your muffler very carefully; a louder-than-stock exhaust is fun for a week and then begins getting old on a daily driver. I tend to use larger-than-stock, stock-type mufflers rather than any of the "high performance" mufflers on the market. Flow is flow, whether it's through an ordinary muffler or one with sexy marketing.

Speedo cable should still be available at NAPA, but have you tried lubing your existing cable?

Dan I am right there with you on the muffler. This will be a daily driver and my trip to the office is 120 miles round trip. I definitley don't want to listen to an exhaust drone for that long!

Any recomendations on a nice big, quiet model with good flow? Anyone?

I am trying to lube the speedo cable first, but I broke off the little catch that keeps it attached to the speedo head. So I thought if they weren't expensive I'd just get a new one. If they are expensive, I'll do my best to lube the one I have and try it.

Thanks!!!

Chris.

I was just talking to the shop that does the work that I can't do myself. I really trust the guy. I asked him about bending an exhaust for me in 2.25 inch.

He said they would recommend stainless steel pipe, and some whizz bang type of clamps where they couldn't weld it together. Said I'd probably be in the neighborhood of $350 to $400 by the time it was done.

Does that sound about right for stainless steel, labor and such?

Thanks

$350-$400 sounds about right for SS exhaust work. It sure beats the $100 economy jobs.

Yeah that price seems about right. $100 less for non SS work.

I haven't checked NAPA, but you can get the speedo cable off of ebay for about $25-30. No idea on quality or brand.

NAPA has them. They have the newer clip on kind, but they don't have the older screw on kind. I had to change over when I put an aftermarket speedo in my 73 Swinger. You can have my old one of you want for shipping, but with you in maryland and me in CA, It will probably be almost as cheap to buy one from NAPA.

I paid $256 for a 2 1/4 exhaust (not SS) with a turbo muffler and Chrome tip.

we just did the exhaust on my 73' dart 4 door (ceej did most of it i watched and drank beer) and the cherry bomb was 18.00 and prolly another 20.00 in misc parts and its solid as hell i have also a 28.00 stinger on the end of it (plz see pic below) so exhaust work can be done for cheap if you have good friends and sl6.org :)

oh.... i so forgot to add. please be carefull of clamps. i had some of the best on my exhaust and they both failed i had to run screws thru them just to hold them on. thank god they are gone!

btw: autozone has a universal speedo cable for 6.00 i am about to install it. i hope its decent and holds up.
